Neil Young Archives II :: Massey Hall 1971

massey-hall-neil-young.jpgYou have no doubt seen this 1971 Neil Young live at Massey Hall show posted here before in bootleg form, but come March 12th it will be released (with an accompanying DVD) as the second live offering in preparation for Neil Young’s archives project.

Here are some notes on The Massey Hall release in Neil’s own words: “This is the album that should have come out between After The Gold Rush and Harvest,” Young says now. “David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very excited about the takes we got on Harvest, and wanted Harvest out. David disagreed. As I listen to this today, I can see why.” Interesting no doubt, as Harvest was the album that broke Neil in terms of, as he put it, middle of the road success before her go bored and headed for the ditch. In a parallel dimension it would be fascinating the witness Young’s artistic trajectory had he released the Massey Hall show instead.

Both this, and the live Fillmore show released late last year, are in preparation for the first installment of Young’s archive series slated for release this fall. Volume I will be an 8-CD, 2-DVD affair chronicling the years 1963-1972.
