The Lagniappe Sessions :: Robert Ellis / Paul Simon

Lagniappe (la ·gniappe) noun \‘lan-ˌyap,’ — 1. An extra or unexpected gift or benefit. 2. Something given or obtained as a gratuity or bonus.

Welcome to the fourth installment of the Lagniappe Sessions in which we invite some of our favorite artists to cut exclusive covers paying tribute to some of their favorite artists. This week we’re joined by Houston singer-songwriter Robert Ellis. Earlier this year Ellis wrote a bit about his hero George Jones which led to our discussing his cutting some Jones sides for this series. Switching things up, though, Ellis decided to pay tribute to one of his earliest influences, Paul Simon. Below are three stripped down renditions of   Simon’s “I Do it For Your Love” from Still Crazy After All These Years, “Everything Put Together Falls Apart” from the self-titled Paul Simon and Graceland’s title track.

  1. Never ceases to amaze me. Robert is one of the most amazing songwriters walking the Earth today. Its also impressive that he pays so much homage to influences. Makes his live shows so memorable when he breaks one of these jewels out and does such a fine job with them. Thanks for posting these.

  2. Hell Yeah. Love this guy. Caught him at St. Rocke a bit back. Fantastic band with three wonderful guitarists including Robert and another gent on tele’s and the phenomenal steel player. Keith Richards wasn’t there, but he emailed to say that this was exactly what he had in mind when he was talking about weaving guitar parts in “Life”. Well worth the price of admission. He did a wonderful solo take on “Cash on the Barrelhead,” when I requested it and he was very gracious to do several other requests on account of it being country night. I ended up buying his LP and rapping with him after the show, talented and nice guy for sure. Thanks again, AD.
