Gob Iron :: Death Songs For The Living

Gob Iron’s Death Songs for the Living is the sort of wonder project that keeps the alt.country/alt.folk set frothing at the mouth in anticipation. And for good reason. Comprised Jay Farrar and Anders Parker, Gob Iron is almost entirely the duo’s take on old, yet re-styled and arranged, traditional folk songs. Recorded in the span of five days in the Autumn of 2004 the project came together when Anders Parker was enlisted to take part in the recording of an aborted Son Volt album. It seems the pair’s shared muse had different plans for their time together.

Inserted between each track are instrumental interludes coalescing the album into a singular piece of art (see below mp3 example) best taken in as a whole. Available Halloween, Death Songs For The Living more than fits the bill for those interested in setting a spooky, backwoods-gothic mood to go along with those tricks and treats.
