William Parker :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

Music flows out of bassist, composer and bandleader William Parker like a river. There are few musical formations that the artist has not tried. From solo, to duo, to trio, to small ensembles, to large ensembles, Parker is constantly moving, evolving and changing, following the flow of the music. While Parker, who turns 70 on January 10, 2022, has recorded and performed with some legendary musicians (e.g. Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Peter Brötzmann) his own voluminous discography, and his manifold compositions, will be his lasting legacy.

Yasmin Williams :: Transmissions

On Yasmin Williams’ second lp, the newly released Urban Driftwood the Virginia-based guitarist creates expansive acoustic music. Playing guitar, kalimba, percussion, and kora, she pulls from disparate musical strands—including the smooth jazz she heard growing up—into music that feels spiritually connected to New Age music, Windham Hill guitar, and the work of contemporaries (and collaborators) like William Tyler, Marisa Anderson and Daniel Bachman, who calls her “a guitarist for a new century.”

Lagniappe SuperSession :: Birthday Blues | 33 Artists Interpret The Music Of James Toth

Surprise! The first Lagniappe SuperSession is a birthday party gathering of 33 artists interpreting the music of songwriter, James Toth. Featuring artists Woods, Marisa Anderson, Lee Ranaldo, William Tyler, Ryley Walker, Tashi Dorji (as Mount), Thurston Moore, Meg Baird, and 25 more, the range of styles and sounds on this compilation show off the universality of Toth’s impressive oeuvre.

Jeffrey Silverstein :: Transmissions

Musician and writer Jeffrey Silverstein. His new EP of gently cosmic guitar music is called Torii Gates, and he’s the head behind the wonderful It’s So Easy (When You Know What You’re Doing), a tribute to the late cult folk musician Ted Lucas, featuring AD favorites like John Andrews & the Yawns, Julianna Barwick and William Tyler, Barry Walker Jr., Amelia Courthouse, and more. He’s also a teacher and a runner. We get into it all on this special bonus episode of Transmissions.

Amelia Courthouse :: Robin’s Ride (An Interpretation)

As far as 70s private-press albums go, Ted Lucas’ sole self-titled long player sits high atop the summit. A truly eccentric outing, the music has proven timeless, healing, and beloved, and NJ-based label Perpetual Doom honors it with It’s So Easy (When You Know What You’re Doing): A Tribute to Ted Lucas, featuring covers of the album’s nine tracks from artists such as William Tyler, Julianna Barwick, Anna St. Louis, Shannon Lay, and more.

Music From First Cow and Other Films Real or Imagined (An Echo Magic Mixtape)

Just before the lockdown, filmmaker Kelly Reichardt released First Cow, the filmmaker’s seventh feature film. A slow and mediative movie, it features sounds by AD compatriot William Tyler, who recorded the soundtrack with Scott Hirsch at Echo Magic Studio. While composing and recording, Tyler and Hirsch put together a “mood board” of sounds they referenced while working. Here, Hirsch shares that mixtape, along with his thoughts about First Cow.

Aquarium Drunkard :: SXSW 2019

Is there still a Tostitos stage? The last time Aquarium Drunkard threw a proper fête at sxsw (2013) our now sitting president was referred to as “the Donald.“ Man, this simulation just gets weirder and weirder…

Anyway, we’re back. Join us Tuesday night, March 12, as we take over the Patreon house on Rainey street from 8-2am. Here’s what you can expect: The Cactus Blossoms, William Tyler, Jess Williamson, White Denim, RF Shannon, y la Bamba.
