Gillian Welch & David Rawlings :: All The Good Times (Ten Acoustic Covers)

This year has been filled with surprises — most of them not particularly great. But a sneak attack Gillian Welch & David Rawlings covers album? That’s the definition of a nice surprise. Recorded live to tape this spring, All The Good Times is warm and loose, as the duo tackles tunes by Elizabeth Cotten, Bob Dylan, Norman Blake and a handful of trad-folk numbers, trading lead vocals, Rawlings’ ever-distinctive guitar ringing out beautifully. The ten-song album feels like hanging out with two (exceptionally talented) close friends. Careful, though — even if this is Welch & Rawlings at their most casual, they still possess untold powers. Their quietly devastating version of the late/great John Prine’s “Hello In There” hits as hard as a heavyweight. | t wilcox
