Desert Heat :: Cat Mask At Huggie Temple

DesertHeatsmallAs a chaser to Steve Gunn’s Time Off (one of the best long players of 2013), dig into this loose-limbed jam session from Desert Heat, a trio made up of Gunn, drummer John Truscinski, and Irish guitarist Cian Nugent. Longtime musical compadres, Gunn and Truscinski’s musical interplay is typically astonishing, and Nugent fits right in between the cracks perfectly, adding his own six-string mojo without upsetting the balance.

Cat Mask, available on 12-inch or digitally, features two side-long excursions that ebb and flow marvelously, calling to mind at times the UK choogle of Full House-era Fairport Convention or even the tranced out Tuareg blues of Bombino. You can check out an edit of the title track below, but trust me, you want to hear the whole thing. words/ t wilcox
