Featuring former DNA drummer Ikue Mori on drum machines, the guitars of punk savant Robert Quine and downtown NYC journeyman Marc Ribot, and the production of post-everything avant-garde impresario John Zorn, one might expect some kind of no wave splatterfest from this mid-90s joint. But Painted Desert is nothing of the sort. Instead, we have one of the missing links in the evolution of ambient country, an astonishing melding of skeletal machine rhythms and big sky guitars.
Twisted Teens :: Florida Water Blues
The punk rock, blues-garage band known as Twisted Teens is moving at warp speed through music history straight on through to the future. This latest, Florida Water Blues, follows Blame the Clown by a few months and the self-titled by less than a year, and, never fear, there’s another one on the way. These people aren’t sitting around waiting, for fame, for money, for recognition. No they’re grabbing up music by the handfuls, mining 1930s electric blues licks and punk jackhammer beats and doo-woppy waltz time swirl and dropping them into a blender. This album ranges a little further afield than the previous two, suggesting that there will be more to Twisted Teens if you wait a bit, though they are already a whole fucking lot.
