Thanks to Satisfied 75, this is a guest post. Keeping with the theme I love, here’s my contribution to the cover wars.

I think we all know the story by now. But, here’s a recap. Fuck-you’s best Johnny Cash reaches his twilight years. I’ve-pissed-on-the-best-and-they’ve-liked-it producer Rick Rubin thinks Cash is still owed more due. Rubin strips Cash down to his guitar and vocals, and hands him songs by Danzig, Soundgarden and Nick Cave. They look odd at first. Cash adjusts them, then turns them black. Then, Rubin hands him Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” Cash likes it. Better yet, his fans love it. Cash wears it to his funeral.

In the liner notes of the Cash: Unearthed box set, Rick Rubin said this, ” … I remember saying when I sent him [“Hurt”], ‘I think this particular song is a really special one. I feel like the words have a lot of power and with you singing them it’s going to take on a whole new light.”

With that, I offer into evidence the original and the cover.
