In the Sex Beat post, a longtime reader mentioned how much they enjoy Alejandro Escovedo’s cover of The Velvet Underground classic “Pale Blue Eyes” (off the groups eponymous third LP . ) This led me to dig out my copy of the R.E.M. compilation Dead Letter Office in order to listen to Stipe and Co’s excellent cover of the track. In fact, this R.E.M. cover was my introduction to the tune back in middle school — long before I had come to know Lou Reed’s voice on the definitive and original version. Check out the subtle – and not so subtle – differences below.
