Since his auspicious, creepy-as-fuck, debut, Wrong Side of Memphis, at the age of 49 in 1998, Johnny Dowd has been exploring the darkest corner’s of the evil that men do. Twelve years, and as many albums later, Dowd continues down his chosen path with Wake Up The Snakes. Like a hardscrabble Larry Brown tale come to life, Snakes evokes Waits-ian murder ballads as if overheard at the VFW.

  1. The Pawnbrokers Wife is my favorite album by this dude

  2. Awesome. My only exposure to this guy was through his wonderful role in the Jim White-focused documentary Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus and he was great in that. Glad to hear more.
