Backed by Thomas Fonnesbaek on bass and Paul Svanberg on drums, veteran Swedish jazz pianist Lars Jansson returned late last year with the release of Just This, the trio’s first material since their 2017 detour, Green Moss Black Sand — a one-off project in collaboration with Icelandic saxophonist, Sigurður Flosason.
Whereas Green Moss played as a Scandinavian sonic meditation on Flosason’s home country, Just This finds the trio in elemental form. Their movements a cascade of studied composure, tempered by the ease of natural interplay and improvisation, Just This, like all of Jansson’s work, is both indebted to its stylistic forebears (Paul Bley, Bill Evans), and wholly its own . . . as demonstrated by the album’s final cut — the rumination that is “To Have Or To Be”.
