Pierre Bensusan :: Le Conseil De Guerre

I picked this up on the super cheap last month flipping through a bin at a record fair. Not a Renn faire, mind you…though some of its offerings could likely pass. Issued in 1977 via Rounder Records, Pierre Bensusan 2 is largely comprised of the acoustic guitarist’s take on traditional European folk music. Sung in Bensusan’s native French, the two sides scan hoary folklore from the Scandinavian tundra to the British isles. Folklore that is both interpreted and (at times) appended by the artist.

Below, dig the tune that continues to draw the stylus back — track two, side one: “Le Conseil De Guerre.” Stick around as things tend to get real “free” midway through, thanks to a dexterous assist from Sylvain Kassap (tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute). Would sit nicely next to Morrison’s Semaines Astrales, non?
