Marcia Griffiths :: Here I Am (Al Green)

Decidedly more dank than UB40’s version, Marcia Griffiths’ cover of Al Green’s “Here I Am (Come and Take Me)” simmers and sizzles with a primal rocksteady beat and a saccharine slow rhythm. Perfect for these dog days of late August, Griffiths recorded the track for her 1974 lp, Play Me Sweet and Nice. Slowing things down and mining the sultry, the interpreter creates room for deep pockets of fuzzed-out, psychedelic soul and caverns of choral funk. It’s one of those rare, lightning in a bottle covers — one that would fit neatly in between Wendell Stuart & The Downbeater’s take on “My World is Empty Without You” and Charlotte Dada’s cover of the fab four’s “Don’t Let Me Down.” words / c depasquale
