Chico Hamilton :: Gengis

Who knew that jazz drummer extraordinaire Chico Hamilton and the mighty Little Feat recorded an album together in 1973? We didn’t — until the excellent Save Your Face blog included a few tunes from The Master on a recent Feat rarities comp. The whole LP is a total treat, with Little Feat providing a sensitive backdrop for a series of excellent Hamilton originals. A standout is the slow-burn chiller “Gengis,” which features extremely tasty Lowell George slide guitar floating over icy electric keyboards and a steady bass/percussion groove. Very funky, but a little bit menacing, too — a perfect blend. words / t wilcox
