Alogte Oho and his Sounds of Joy :: Allema Timba

Here’s a delightfully offbeat slice of highlife that’s been on steady repeat lately. Alogte Oho – a popular singer of Frafra gospel from Ghana—and his Sounds of Joy ensemble released Mam Yinne Wa a year or so back via the Berlin-based Philophon label. The record is restlessly forward thinking and creatively impassioned, sending celebratory highlife music and deep-pocket afro funk grooves into a deep pool of adventurous sound.

Check out “Allema Timba,” its whirling synths and swooping horns playing cat and mouse with the seductive rhythm. Slow-burning, romantic, mysterious, the dance gives way to elevation. | c depasquale
