Over the last year, whispers surrounding SML have escalated into outright evangelism. The Los Angeles quintet’s live performances — dub-informed, jazz-rooted, groove-obsessed, and driven by collective improvisation — have turned converts everywhere from hometown rooms to this year’s Big Ears Festival. With Spontaneous Music Live, their new album for International Anthem, SML finally documents that experience in full: two sprawling, unedited performances recorded at Zebulon that capture the band shape-shifting in real time.
