Sometimes Jeffrey Silverstein uses words, delivering them in a low, Bill Callahan-esque drawl. Other times, he let’s the music do the talking. The most recent single from Silverstein’s forthcoming LP Doggone, the languid “Patchouli,” is a case of the latter. The tune is a patient blend of swelling synths, shimmering pedal steel from Rick Pedrosa, and Silverstein’s electric guitar, with a strutting disco undercurrent propelling it all. It plays like Kosmische gone down-home, or Fairport Convention dozed on strong West Coast grass . . .
