This week, we welcome one of our favorite musicians to the show: Mark Lightcap of Acetone and the Dick Slessig Combo. Last year, New West Records reissued Acetone’s discography, featuring illuminating liner notes by J. Spaceman of Spiritualized/Spaceman 3 and Drew Daniel of Matmos/The Soft Pink Truth. The occasion prompted a great conversation with Mark that we published in written form last year. This week on the show, he joins us for a loose talk from his backyard in LA. From “beautiful music” to his run-ins with Oasis, this conversation takes plenty of fascinating turns.

The Ecstasy of Gold :: Volume One
The Ecstasy of Gold finds members of Acetone, Dick Slessig Combo, and Dengue Fever teaming up for a set that spans fuzzed out workouts, psych, prog flexes, surf, and sure enough, Morricone-y grandeur.
Bee Pieces :: Dorothy’s On Island Time (Featuring Mark Lightcap)
A blissful reunion of Acetone drummer Steve Hadley and guitarist Mark Lightcap, “Dorothy’s On Island Time” sways like a leaf on the air, barely suspended. From it the recently released Volume 1, the song allows Lightcap to get generously far out, playing it woozy and open. Though more compact than the average Dick Slessig Combo joint, it’s no less locked into a state of meditative charm.
Dick Slessig Combo :: Wichita Lineman
“Wichita Lineman” finds the Dick Slessig Combo harnessing the song’s original melodic components and locking in. Mark Lightcap’s guitar drifts and melts away, evoking Isaac Hayes’ super-spaced soul or Duane Eddy conjuring up celestial waves crashing on a cosmic beach; the rhythm section of Steve Goodfriend and Carl Bronson mind meld; occasionally an organ flutters. The song becomes a mantra.
