Fabiano Do Nascimento & E Ruscha V :: Aquáticos
Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento and Los Angeles producer Eddie Ruscha (aka E Ruscha V and Secret Circuit) team up for the gorgeously ambient and adventurous Aquáticos, released earlier this year on the ever-reliable Music From Memory label. Pairing Nascimento’s 7 and 10-string nylon guitars with Ruscha’s modular synths, drum machines, and vintage keyboards, the duo create meditative, electro-acoustic sounds with an alchemical fluidity.

Vila, the new symphonic samba jazz album by prolific Brazilian guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento, feels like both his most intimate and his most grandiose, as he tries to keep the idyllic minimalism of his style of acoustic guitar while striving for the expressive radiance of 1960s noir film scores. Nascimento, now a fixture of the Los Angeles jazz scene, wanted the record to pay tribute to the street he grew up in Rio, an enclosed alleyway in the old neighborhood of Catete . .

Fabiano do Nascimento seems weary of the “Brazilian music” label, at least when it ties him to particular artistic expectations. He prefers to aim for an impossible universality than to ever be pigeonholed to an ideal of national sound. His new solo material, out via Brazilian music aficionados Far Out, complicates this ambivalence.
