I like to ‘check in’ with this clip every now and again. You know, like right now. Footage recorded July, 2 1966, a year prior to Coltrane’s passing the following summer. This is also an excuse to give away a couple of copies of the “My Favorite Things” 45 that the label ran in conjunction with the recent release of their John Coltrane – The Atlantic Years In Mono vinyl box earlier this year. So, if that floats your boat, leave a comment below along with one of your favorite Coltrane video clips. Winner notified later this week via email.

Fantastic. I love this live tv performance in its entirety, but have a soft spot for “Naima.”

That brief era when Dolphy joined the band is one of my favorite Coltrane periods. It’s tight and borderline accessible, but it’s quickly getting much more free and explosive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goXvpLMrY54
This one is the JAM. McCoy lights a fire around the 10 minute mark, and Elvin is burning as always.

I would have to say The John Coltrane Quartet playing Ascension live at Antibes, France, 1965.
Thanks for the chance and thank you for this blog. Long time fan.

it’s hard not to go for the 1, 2 punch of coltrane w/ the classic miles group on ‘So What’… https://youtu.be/zqNTltOGh5c
I guess we are lucky to have at least one live film/video of Coltrane playing Love Supreme, Antibes Jazz Festival in South France 1965.

Coltrane’s Alabama in this video is my favorite. I like the black and white video of them all in the studio environment. No fancy background; the music steals the show.

I will always enjoy McCoy but I prefer Alice Coltrane on piano. Others might hate but there is something really unique about Alice and John’s interplay and it always makes me wonder what might have been.
Heres a ‘Coltrane’ clip.

sorry.
Maybe too easy…but hey, it is sacred. I scored an original vinyl press of A Love Supreme from a neighbor cleaning out the garage. A little marked up but the most beautiful music ever recorded IMHO https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T1wlfNE748s
Another vote for Alabama: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saN1BwlxJxA
Although Santino’s post is probably the winner and the grainy classics are nice, at around 10:40 in this clear set, you really see what’s happening: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1576wf_jazz-icons-john-coltrane-live-in-60-61-65-1_music
Call me Capt. Obvious but my favorite is his only hit, My Favorite Things.

This animated PBS short series (Blank on Blank) featuring a Coltrane interview is one of my favessss, giving us a rare glimpse inside the heart/mind/soul behind this spiritual force of a musical man.
Alabama, again: https://youtu.be/saN1BwlxJxA
