Daniel Lanois :: Power

Echoing both his recent work with D’Angelo and Yellow Moon, his engaging 1989 classic with the Neville Brothers, Daniel Lanois and Heavy Sun Orchestra’s “Power” rattles with dubby intensity. It’s the latest drop from the forthcoming Heavy Sun lp. Joined his frequent collaborator Rocco DeLuca on guitar and vocals, vocalist/organist (and Baptist minister) Johnny Shepherd, and bassist/vocalist Jim Wilson, along with Chris Thomas and visionary drummer Brian Blade, Lanois layers trunk rattling synths under space gospel exaltations. “Why can’t we be together?” is the resonate refrain, but the swaying bass drops carry necessary spiritual weight too. | j woodbury | photo: Ward Robinson
