Touring The Blogroll :: Some News

Currituck County :: Channeling John Fahey

Country, folk, raga, jazz, and bluegrass. All these genres and more play out and interweave in Kevin Barker's wanderlust album Ghost Man on First. This first installment in the Ghost Man trilogy is challenging to say the least, but rewarding under the right circumstances. Fans of free-form neo-folk should dig, i.e. fans of Animal Collective, Bright Black Morning Light, etc.

Live Upload Series III :: The Meters – 1977

Nobody..and I mean nobody funks it up like The Meters did in their prime. Shit-hot grooves. I have collected a number of shows from the band's '70s hey-day, and this is one of my favorites. Culled from a 1977 New Orleans Live radio broadcast -- complete with a smokey-voiced DJ popping in and out during the duration of the show. Great banter from the band too. Several times throughout the show Art Neville speaks directly to the greater New Orleans radio audience . . .

NEW YORK - Wilson Pickett, the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits "Mustang Sally" and "In The Midnight Hour," died of a heart attack Thursday in a Reston, Va., hospital, according to his management company. He was 64. - via A.P.---------------

Sad news. I have gotten down to Pickett's music many, many times...the essence of Soul music. Here are a couple of my favorite moments. He will be truly missed.

Doveman :: Weighing In

I'd like to add my two cents on Doveman, which you may have seen around the block on some of the other music blogs the past week. Look for my review of The Acrobat in the next week, but in the meantime do check out some of the tunes up on their Web site available for download that I have linked below.
