Setting :: At Black Mountain College Museum

In Setting, the trio of Bowles, Fennelly and Westerlund have lit upon an improvisational ensemble of astonishing force and inventiveness, fluent in a musical language that melds roots, jazz, drone and minimalism. Their work is as swirling and cryptic as the abstract expressionists who once called Black Mountain College home. Even as a chaser to their proper album from last fall, at Black Mountain College Museum shows the group relentlessly evolving. It possesses a gnarled, terrible beauty. Like Appalachia itself . . .

The Lagniappe Sessions :: En Attendant Ana

Principia, the third album from Parisian quintet En Attendant Ana, was one of 2023’s most enduring pleasures. Throughout its 10 extremely catchy / sneakily sophisticated tunes, the LP contained elements of vintage 1990s indie, dashes of Stereolab-esque motorik pop and a hint of the classic French yé-yé style, all centered on the winning vocals of Margaux Bouchaudon. Those ingredients are all on display in the band’s debut Lagniappe Session, as they tackle tunes by Tim Gane’s pre-‘Lab band McCarthy and Britpop synth-sters Dubstar, in addition to a delightful French language rendition of the old . . .

Herbie Hancock :: February 16, 1977

Herbie Hancock became a giant under the tutelage of giants. With Mwandishi and Headhunters, the former student then reared his own roster of jazz heavyweights. Unfortunately, at the height of his popularity and singular vision, Hancock didn’t get to work those forebears which shaped him into the iconoclast he was to become. Thanks to a Chicago radio recording from February 1977, we do have an opportunity to hear Hancock with another singular voice of his instrument--with both artists at the peak of their prowess. For this seemingly one-off performance Hancock teamed up with the king of the . . .

Danielle Boutet :: Pièces

Danielle Boutet’s Pièces is a perfect addition to the FT$ catalogue, offering an ice-frosted window into Quebec in the mid-1980s. Chilly marimbas, even chillier DX-7 synths, slightly menacing fretless bass, a female Gainsbourg muttering enigmatically in French … Again, it’s all hard to sum up or fit into any particular genre, though you might note post-punk impulses rubbing up against new age influences, minimalism meeting up with the Chanson tradition . . .

Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath

Previously lost footage captured on French television in 1973., dip in to this frenetic and blissful clip from Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath. After a beautiful two-minutes of the long-fingered namesake’s chopping, the South African/English ensemble marches through a masterclass of sound, worthy of many lost hours deep in the discographies of its (then) ten members . . .

Muriel Grossmann :: Devotion

Muriel Grossman already has a formidable discography, releasing over a dozen albums over the last fifteen years, mostly on her own DreamlandRecords label in Spain; so, it's a little shocking that her stateside debut is this late coming. But the double LP Devotion on Jack White’s Third Man Records, does not blow the opportunity. If this is the first thing you are hearing from her, you may be taken aback by how confidently this group traces the many musical tributaries in and out of American soul . . .

Pedro Ricardo :: Soprem Bons Ventos

Soprem Bons Ventos, the title of Porto-born, Berlin based multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ Pedro Ricardo’s debut album, released last year on Soundway Records, translates to “Good Winds Blow,” a deceptively placid phrase for a record that alchemizes tranquil folk melodies with frenetic energies that meld genre, place, and time . . .

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Reverend Baron

The Lagniappe Sessions return in 2024, this time stepping into the world of Reverend Baron, the nom de tune of LA based singer-songwriter Daniel Garcia. For this installment of the series, the multi-instrumentalist, engineer, and producer reflects on early '70s Randy Newman, the title track from British singer-songwriter Labi SIffre's 1972 LP, Paul Simon's "Nobody", via the 1980 film One-Trick Pony, and the enigmatic Lewis Baloue's "Let's Fall In Love . . .

Penza Penza :: Electricolorized

Electricolorized is a decidedly slinkier affair than its stomping predecessor, Neanderthal Rock. Panfilov still scribbles with his sub-basement guitar fuzz, but elements of easy listening, 60s French chanson, Joe Meek sound effects and tasteful David Axelrod-style jazz-funk are slipping into the mix. Still, Penza’s ultra-tight rhythm section never ceases to bounce . . .

Träd, Gräs och Stenar: A Collective History

The greatest rock doc never filmed, Träd, Gräs och Stenar: A Collective History chronicles the continual evolution and rebirth of Sweden’s hard jamming ambassadors of free-range psych. Part art book, part oral history, the book puts you smack in the thick of TGoS’ heyday, as testimony from group members and close associates comprise a vivid composite portrait of the collective’s life in the Swedish underground and beyond . . .

Cowboy Sadness :: Selected Jambient Works, Vol. 1

Cowboy Sadness is comprised of guitarist Peter Silberman of The Antlers, drummer Nicholas Principe of Port St. Willow, and keyboardist David Moore of Bing & Ruth (and his recent, well-received collaboration with Steve Gunn). I can’t shake the feeling that this is, at least in part, a piss-take. Cowboy Sadness is a hilariously on-the-nose name for an ambient country project, and an implicit skewering of a genre that sometimes gets a little cheerless in its high lonesome drift. Titling their debut Selected Jambient Works, Vol. 1 makes it, somehow, even funnier.
