Sessa :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

On the eve of releasing his third album Sergio Sayeg, aka Sessa, is finally feeling comfortable with the idea that this is what he does for a living. But it’s more complicated than that. He’s a Brazilian musician recording modern Brazilian music with strong vintage references for an American indie label. He’s one in a long line of Brazilian musicians with international audiences. With the birth of his son in 2022, he’s also a father and his priorities have flipped, challenging him to find new ways to tap into his creativity and grow as a musician while supporting a family. We catch up with Sergio to discuss the way Pequena Vertigem de Amor sounds different from his previous albums, from the instrumentation to the vocals and why he thinks it’s his best album yet.

Sessa :: Estrela Acesa

A celestial nocturne, Estrela Acesa is the sophomore stunner from Sessa. It’s been three years since the São Paulo-born singer-songwriter dropped his perennially stellar debut, Grandeza—a jubilant, sun-dappled LP embodying a confluence of Brazil’s rich past and musical traditions. But where Grandeza was an ode to temporal pleasures, Estrela Acesa is a humble meditation on the nature of love, eternity, and the point of intersection between music and spirit.

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Sessa

Atenção! An outsize portion of our 2019 listening was dominated by Grandeza, the debut album from São Paulo–born artist Sessa. As such, the follow lagniappe session is something akin to the sound of the inevitably. This, the first installment of a two-part session, begins with Sessa’s delicate rendering of Helene Smith’s soulful “I’m Controlled By Your Love”, a cover deftly employed to audiences while in LA earlier this year. Next, the artist pays tribute to fellow countryman, and Tropicália pioneer, Jorge Mautner — taking on 1976’s “Samba Jambo”, before closing out with Haitian composer and guitarist Frantz Casseus’s “Yanvalloux”.
