Kathleen Edwards :: Building 55

It’s 1999. Kathleen Edwards records a seven-song EP entitled Building 55 and presses 500 copies. This EP, now long out of print, is the first recorded output of Edwards’ career prior to her signing with a label and releasing her full length debut, 2003’s Failer. Here are the seven tracks off Building 55 for posterity. Brittle, affecting, alt.country - a glimpse of the sound . . .

Seasons Greeting’s From :: Joni Mitchell

"Its coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees, they're putting up reindeer, and singing songs of joy and peace. Oh, I wish I had a river to skate away on..."

So sings Joni Mitchell on quite possibly one of the saddest holiday tunes ever recorded to tape. A cornerstone track off her 1971 LP, become a member or log in.

The Pogues – Fairytale of New York

Irish lilt mixed with the attitude of early UK punk was what initially fueled the The Pogues. Fronted by the infamous Shane MacGowan, The Pogues lifted traditional Irish music out of the gutter of its past injecting it with a strong dose of piss and lager.

Anchored by the crossover Christmas ballad "Fairytale of New York", the Steve Lillywhite produced lp If I Should Fall from Grace With God was the band's clarion . . .

The Shaky Hands :: 2007 Tour EP

A companion tour EP to the Portland band's 2007 self-titled album. I did not have the chance to pick one of these up in person, so The Shaky Hands management was kind enough to hook us up. Recommended to fans of perky, jangly, rough around the edges, college rock.

The Beach Boys :: Funky Pretty (1973)

The Beach Boys "Funky Pretty" is the full on jam. It's funky, it's pretty. It's what I want in an early '70s Beach Boys song. Released on the 1973 Holland LP, as well as the live album The Beach Boys in Concert

Band of Horses :: Detlef Schrempf

In its humble four minutes and twenty nine seconds, Band of Horses "Detlef Schrempf," the fourth track off their sophomore LP, Cease To Begin, invokes that inexplicable something that demands that I press repeat time after time. And honestly, I couldn't even tell you what the song is about -- only that Ben Bridwell's aching . . .

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss :: Raising Sand

While I have long counted myself a fan of both the music of Alison Krauss and that of Robert Plant's Zeppelin, I must admit, when I first read the news, earlier this year, that the two were teaming up for a duets album I was more than just a little skeptical. On paper it just sounded suspect. Alas, having recently picked up the album, all my initial, unfounded, fears were laid to rest.   In a word . . .
