Last week I re-read (most) of William S. Burroughs' ode to heroin Naked Lunch. It packs just as much or more of a sordid punch as I remember. Mad junkie jibber-jabber. In honor or the book's famed family of dildo's, Steely Dan I, II, and III, I present you two Live

FIVE EIGHT
These guys just don't stop. 15 years on and they're still beating the shit out of their audience. A friend in college turned me on to Five Eight, and I have been following their career ever since.
This is their latest album released while supporting R.E.M. on tour last autumn. I imagine their unique brand of post-punk-angry . . .

Richmond Fontaine: Hardcore Troubadours
Richmond Fontaine's latest release, The Fitzgerald, was an album I had ignored far too long. I have now remedied that. An acoustic downtrodden affair, The Fitzgerald spins tales of two-time losers trying to make it through the Reno, NV night . . .

Son Volt’s Medication
I've been listening to this new tune off Okemah And The Melody Of Riot a lot the past month. Has a very "eastern" vibe to it. Smoke yourself something and listen. He did.

Who Killed Laura Palmer?
Twin Peaks. Let the weirdness begin. I've been a fan of both the television series and it's offical soundtrack for years. Both have staying power. The Angelo Badalamenti scored OST paints the perfect perverse backdrop for David Lynch's magnum opus. His and Lynch's protege, Julee Cruise, provides the ethereal/haunting vocals on the Twin Peaks theme "Falling." Trivia: David Lynch composed . . .

The Cover: Masters of War
In the spirit of the cover wars, I offer up probably Bob Dylan's most politically charged song, "Masters of War."Dylan said this about the original in the liner notes of the album for which it appears, Freewheelin': "I've never really written anything like that before. I don't sing songs which hope people will die, but I couldn't help it in . . .

Friends Call Him Al
I'm going to take this opportunity in Justin's absence to do what music blogs do best: I heard, you should hear.Alejandro Escovedo is a rock star, legend, artist, songwriter, Austin music scene fixture, and, worst of all, not physically well. I was fortunate enough to visit him, once, at his home in South Austin. Right before I left . . .

The Cover: Hurt
Thanks to Justin, this is a guest post. Keeping with the theme I love, here's my contribution to the cover wars.I think we all know the story by now. But, here's a recap. Fuck-you's best Johnny Cash reaches his twilight years. I've-pissed-on-the-best-and-they've-liked-it producer Rick Rubin thinks Cash is still owed more . . .

The Cover: Rainbow Connection
Now I'm certainly not advocating that anyone harsh on ole Kermit's mellow, but Willie has a pretty damn good cover.

Red Hash, Indeed
Psych-folk beardo, Gary Higgins, is seeing his 1973 album Red Hash gain a new audience due to it's recent re-release. I say bring it on. For a taste, dig on the track below in all it's stoned-out glory.

The Cover: Quicksand
The cover battles continue. In light of Dinosaur Jr.'s temporary reformation, today's selection is David Bowie's "Quicksand" of his 1971 album Hunky Dory. The cover: Dinosaur Jr.'s version off their 1991 ep Whatever's Cool With Me.
