Stanton Moore :: All Kooked Out!

Want to mention one of my favorite drummers/percussionists of today. On his solo debut, Stanton Moore, enlists the eclectic help of Charlie Hunter (eight-string guitar) and Skerik (saxophonics, kookification.) What they lay down is far jazzier than any of Moore's past work with his full time gig Galactic. In case you're hesitant, this album . . .

Greetings From Louisiana

Part IV of my ongoing 50 states project in which I am marrying my interest in retro travel-postcards with music indigenous to each state. Today we find ourselves in Louisiana, home to one of my favorite cities, New Orleans. Since 1995 I have visited the Crescent city at least once a year -- always drawn back by the medley of music, food, and it's indescribably rich culture. The city is an original . . .

Cover Wars VIII :: Hey Jude (Soul Style)

Recorded in 1969 at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, Pickett was aided by (a then unknown session player) Duane Allman. Allman's nasty guitar at the end of the track was a sign of great things to come. I'm not posting the Beatles original, but I assume most have it committed to memory anyhow.DOWNLOAD:MP3: Wilson Pickett - Hey Jude (beatles cover)

The Brokedown :: The Dutchman’s Gold

We are somewhere in the hills and canyons that make up Los Angeles. That much is true. The lonesome harmonies, light organ fills and pedal-steel accompaniment remind us so. But make no mistake, this is clear Pop territory and in the best sense of the word. Where Pop is defined by Josh Rouse, A.C. Newman, Britt Daniels and the like. The Brokedown's self-released debut EP, "The Dutchman's Gold," is a modern take on . . .

NPR: Neil Young Returns with Prairie Wind

Weekend Edition  · Neil Young extended audio interview with NPR's Scott Simon. "The creation of Neil Young's latest album, Prairie Wind, was punctuated by a life-changing "medical event" for the singer-songwriter.
