Pet Politics Swedish Style

Last week I received an email from a musician named Magnus Larson hailing from Sweden. He apparently contacted some other folks too. Larson creates under the name Pet Politics, and writes & records out of his bedroom, one-man-band style. If you have some time, check out his Web site...great use of crayon. Good stuff. Kind of a detached Lou Reed thing.

Will Oldham or Palace or Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy or…

I have been on a Will Oldham (insert alias here) kick the past few months. He seems to always turn up somewhere when I least expect it -- e.g.: cameo role in the fantastic new film Junebug, soundtrack work on All The Real Girls, etc. With an intimidating back catalog, Oldham continues on his prolific path working on various collaborative . . .

Vic Chestnutt’s Brute Influence

While digging through my iPod last week on vacation, my brother put on some Brute which I had neglected for some time. Out of all Vic Chestnutt's catalog the two Brute albums remain my favorite. While a big fan of most of his work, there is something about Widespread Panic acting as . . .

Hunter S. Thompson: Final Sendoff

In compliance with his wishes, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson will have his remains blasted out of a 150 foot tall monument at his Woody Creek, CO home this Saturday.

"He envisioned it to be a beautiful party. The most amazing people would be there. His friends would celebrate his life. And he was even specific that there would be clinking of ice and whisky." Among those clinking will be Sean Penn and longtime friend Johnny Depp, who helped cover most of the cost for both the . . .

Steely Dan via Naked Lunch

Last week I re-read (most) of William S. Burroughs' ode to heroin Naked Lunch. It packs just as much or more of a sordid punch as I remember. Mad junkie jibber-jabber. In honor or the book's famed family of dildo's, Steely Dan I, II, and III, I present you two Live

FIVE EIGHT

These guys just don't stop. 15 years on and they're still beating the shit out of their audience. A friend in college turned me on to Five Eight, and I have been following their career ever since.

This is their latest album released while supporting R.E.M. on tour last autumn. I imagine their unique brand of post-punk-angry . . .

Richmond Fontaine: Hardcore Troubadours

Richmond Fontaine's latest release, The Fitzgerald, was an album I had ignored far too long. I have now remedied that. An acoustic downtrodden affair, The Fitzgerald spins tales of two-time losers trying to make it through the Reno, NV night . . .

Son Volt’s Medication

I've been listening to this new tune off Okemah And The Melody Of Riot a lot the past month. Has a very "eastern" vibe to it. Smoke yourself something and listen. He did.

Who Killed Laura Palmer?

Twin Peaks. Let the weirdness begin. I've been a fan of both the television series and it's offical soundtrack for years. Both have staying power. The Angelo Badalamenti scored OST paints the perfect perverse backdrop for David Lynch's magnum opus. His and Lynch's protege, Julee Cruise, provides the ethereal/haunting vocals on the Twin Peaks theme "Falling." Trivia: David Lynch composed . . .
