I started playing piano and out of the few things I had written down on scraps of paper started to record little songs in the basement thinking 'well, I'm gonna get off my deal and maybe I'll sign another.' I wasn't sure whether I was gonna make another record or not. This is the only record I could have made even if I wanted to make a more upbeat or more rocking record . . .

The Yo La Tengo gang hit Los Angeles last week at the El Rey with their Wheel-O-Songs---which fortuitously included a set comprised of tunes via their garage rock alter-egos, Condo Fucks. (That album, by the way, remains a favorite in the YLT ancillary project universe). The band clearly loves a good cover as evidenced on their 2004 collaboration backing up Chris Stamey on his LP

Greater Pacific is a new project featuring Kyle Kersten and John Phinney from Travel by Sea and their debut EP, Rainfall, is about the most aptly named record to come out in awhile. Every thing about this EP sounds like a soft rain shower - from the languid percussion, electronic effects, guitar and especially Kersten's voice, a more liquid and less nasal cousin to Dean Wareham of Luna.

It's the pedal steel of Phinney that proves this record's defining instrumental piece, loaning something like the lazy . . .
