Sevens (Politiko) :: Pete Seeger, Turn! Turn! Turn!

(Sevens, a feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song. From now through the November 4th election, Sevens will focus on political songs)

Protest songs and politically framed ballads are almost immediately associated with Vietnam-era musicians. Or maybe it's that those musicians are almost immediately branded as subverters of a cultural paradigm during such a seachange in the American substance. Nonetheless, their words and countercultural display of freedom marked a shift in artistic expression. They not only popularized free will . . .

DeVotchKa :: The AD Interview

Aquarium Drunkard caught up with DeVotchKa, last week in New Orleans, prior to their performance at this year's Voodoo festival.   Now a decade into their career the Denver based group has grown a steady fanbase fusing elements of old-world gypsy, mariachi, brass, and American folk traditions into a bouillabaisse all their own.   Two years after scoring the soundtrack to the breakout film become a member or log in.

Quintron (New Orleans, LA) :: The AD Interview

AD: You have played in New Orleans for years and years, and now are playing Voodoo. I was thinking that Jazz Fest is a celebration of New Orleans/Louisiana culture and with so many bands in the Voodoo lineup of different styles-it seems Voodoo might actually present a representation of New Orleans culture and how it continues to grow in stature nationwide. How do you think about the two . . .

Voodoo Festival 2008 :: Erykah Badu (Friday)

Of the national acts performing at this year's Voodoo Fest one of the artists whose name consistently pops up, in terms of anticipation, is that of Erykah Badu.

My Morning Jacket
had been faithfully covering Erykah Badu's slow burning "Tyrone" for almost a decade when she joined them onstage in . . .

Voodoo Festival 2008 :: Man Man (I’d Rather Go Blind)

Man Man's live shows have become the stuff of of near-legend over the past couple of years. As I mentioned earlier they are one of the touring artists I plan on catching today at the fest.

Off The Record :: Stanton Moore (New Orleans, LA)

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

The Replacements :: The Sire/Warner Reissues

The new set of Replacements reissues, focusing on their four albums for Sire/Warner Brothers records (Tim, Pleased to Meet Me, Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down), deal with the most controversial albums in the band's catalogue - controversial in regards to their stock compared to the earlier albums, in recording quality, even in integrity. Sevens :: John Loudermilk, Goin’ To Hell On A Sled

(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

Anyone else ready for this election to end? Me too. Wall Street has lost its temporary gains, we're still at war, the country is more polarized than ever and the national deficit is so immense most of us cannot wrap our heads around it without inducing a minor headache. Having said that, here is some levity John D. Loudermilk style. In 1969 Loudermilk released his psych-country classic

Les Blanks :: Shoot The Horse (2008)

Sleazy...nasty...seventies rock 'n roll. If that's your bag (and why wouldn't it be) add Les Blanks to your radar, as they are just that -- only they exist in the here and now of the 21st century. Easy touchstones for the band's live sound would be a little CCR crossed with the soul of early Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Shoot The Horse is available on vinyl or downloadable, digitally, for free
