Silver Jew :: The Movie

As previously reported Dave Berman and his Joos are the subject of director Michael Tully's documentary following the band on their tour throughout Israel last summer.

Earlier last week, I had the opportunity to watch a screener of the film and am happy to report Berman appears to be in both good health and in good spirits, having recently rediscovered religion (as well as having buried some old demons.) This doc is a must see for . . .

Robert Pollard :: Best of the Fading Captain Series

Released by Luna Music, Crickets: The Best of The Fading Captain Series compiles fifty six of Pollards self-released solo joints throughout the years in a (kinda) tidy two-disc set. This is huge, personally, as a) it's a nice set to play in the car, b) I never bought all those records, and c) I can now clean up the dozens of random Fading Captain mp3s off my hard drive. The Best In Mens Clothing :: Paul’s Boutique

Reading the Paul's Boutique 33 1/3, by Dan LeRoy, was both an education in sampling and a blast from the wayyy past, as I bought this on cassette in the seventh grade, almost twenty years ago (wow), and literally wore it out. The cassette itself was green plastic -- my friend's copy was purple.

After the cassette wore out I graduated to a CD which offered the option of skipping to the exact sections of the track I wanted to hear...and . . .

Emitt Rhodes :: Somebody Made For Me

A number of folks inquired about this tune after I played it on the air last Wednesday. Soooo...it was Emitt Rhodes "Somebody Made For Me" off his 1970 self-titled debut album. This is just about the absolute perfect pop song.

Under The Covers :: Babylon Burning

During the Mountain Goats recent Daytrotter session, John Darnielle did his part to bring reggae music back into the fold to an audience that may have written off the genre as bad "lifestyle" music that is sadly way too often co-opted by cruise ship commercials and bad beach bars.

His stripped down cover of "Babylon Burning" exudes the best of the songs raw essence. A genre staple, check . . .

The Same Band You’ve Always Known…

Tonight, The White Stripes played a secret, tiny show here in L.A. to a group of super-fans who, apparently, camped out in Hollywood in front of the old Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. -- in the baking heat -- for four days. While I would personally never pull such a move, I must say that after digging on Icky Thump

Daydream Nation :: Reissued & Revisited

While (obviously) nowhere near as revelatory as the original album, the live bonus material on disc II of the Daydream Nation reissue has most definitely increased our anticipation in seeing the band at the Greek Theatre in July.

Set to perform the album in its entirety -- in select cities across the United . . .

White Denim :: Vinyl EP Out This Week

The above photo was snapped in Austin by White Denim super-enthusiast Gorilla vs. Bear. Hey man, nice shot. You may recall us describing these guys as "the shit" post SXSW, because, well, they are.

The band is releasing their recent EP on vinyl this week if your into that type of thing. If not, check the iTunes order link below.

Patterson Hood’s Guide To Ath-fest (Athens, GA)

The Athens, GA music and arts festival, Ath-fest, is less than a week away (June 20-24), but unlike last summer I will not be in attendance this year. Too bad, too, as The Whigs and Drive-By Truckers are headlining this years fest...and both bands pack a wallop of a live show.

Having resided in Athens for well over a decade, Drive-By Trucker . . .
