The Cover: Hurt

Thanks to Justin, this is a guest post. Keeping with the theme I love, here's my contribution to the cover wars.I think we all know the story by now. But, here's a recap. Fuck-you's best Johnny Cash reaches his twilight years. I've-pissed-on-the-best-and-they've-liked-it producer Rick Rubin thinks Cash is still owed more . . .

The Cover: Rainbow Connection

Now I'm certainly not advocating that anyone harsh on ole Kermit's mellow, but Willie has a pretty damn good cover.

Red Hash, Indeed

Psych-folk beardo, Gary Higgins, is seeing his 1973 album Red Hash gain a new audience due to it's recent re-release. I say bring it on. For a taste, dig on the track below in all it's stoned-out glory.

Don’t F*CK With The Star Room Boys

After the Bloodkin post i'm on an Athens tangent. The now defunct Star Room Boys were one of my favorite neo-traditional-honky-tonk country outfits until their 2003 demise. In their eight years together they released two fantastic albums: 1999's Why Do Lonely Men & Women Want to Break Each Other's Hearts?, and 2002's This . . .

…just like something out of tennessee williams

Everyone has a band they root for. An underdog. A band, who despite an enormous amount of talent and perseverance, remain obscure. Life in the minor leagues. The band I root for is Athens, Georgia’s Bloodkin. Practicing what they preach, for better or worse, for the past 15+ years of their creative career.

Some of the most haunted Southern literature never committed to paper.

Bloodkin is: religion, redemption, regret, a bar fight, pride, shame . . .

Unlike the recently released LP "On The Beach," Neil Young, at this point, has no plans to release this Live album on compact disc. Luckily, you can find it HERE...

Garcia 8/1/42 – 8/9/95

For a long time I have believed The Grateful Dead to be an incredibly misunderstood band. Too often (90% of the time) their music has been eclipsed by their fanbase, and the tired cliches that come with it. Check out the link below for a vast vault of free Live Grateful Dead recordings. Set aside your pre-conceptions and dig deep into this treasure trove of American music. To quote the late Bill Graham, “The Grateful Dead aren't the best at what they . . .

Velvet Underground vs. Cowboy Junkies

A truly inspired cover can sometimes trump an artist's original vision for a song. In this ongoing series, The Cover Wars, I'm interested in which version (or versions) you prefer. The song: Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" off their 1970 album Loaded. The cover: The Cowboy Junkies version off The Trinity Session album.
