This One Goes Out To The LG…

"Recorded live at New York's Fillmore East in the spring of 1970, this CD (as well as a film of the same name) documents a slapdash extravaganza (the whole thing was conceived, organized, and abandoned over the course of two months) that overflows with big, brassy, rockin' soul. Front and center is Joe Cocker, a spastically charismatic Brit soul shouter. The bandleader is Leon Russell, playing some . . .

Up & Coming (eyes peeled/ears open)

I have little interest on the so-called cutting-edge per se, as the folks on my blog-roll have that covered (and do it far better than I ever could). But occaionally I do like to . . .

Cat Power :: The Greatest

This album has that old school blue-eyed soul Dusty In Memphis feel to it -- which I couldn't be more excited for. Side up to this with a plate of Rendezvous ribs, cornbread and a beer. Curious as to how this will play with her present fan . . .

F U G A Z I :: Seminal, The

Few bands/artists shaped the way I look at music more than Fugazi did at 16 in 1991 - continuing until today. Visceral, intense, unforgiving, original -- all the while acting independent from the mainstream. While the band came under attack from a portion of their audience as their sound slowed and mellowed, they seemed to stay right in step with my expanding tastes. Or vice versa. You really can't scream forever. Here are some tracks . . .

The Mendoza Line :: The Overview Pt. I

The Mendoza Line have a new album out November 22nd entitled Full of Light and Full of Fire. The album is self-described as "a startling meditation on the abuse of power and those who are left in its wake: the spiritually and economically disenfranchised, the isolated and ruined, those who are lost or are simply trying to disappear." Sounds deeeep. Here is an overview to get . . .
