Happy Halloween :: C.A. Quintet: Trip Thru Hell

One of the most unique, unheralded albums of the 60s, the C.A. Quintet's Trip Thru Hell was a small indie pressing of under 500 from the Candy Floss label, making it a very rare 1968/1969 release. Originals will set you back a pretty penny, but for the die hard may be worth it considering the CD version does not faithfully recreate the back side of the LP.

Charles Manson :: Lie: The Love and Terror Cult

Charles Manson has always been cloaked and hidden in music, and if not music, then at least the counterculture that swirls around it.   Manson and his Family have, since their inception upon his release from McNeil Island in 1967 and subsequent move to the Bay Area, associated themselves with the counterculture in general and the musical counterculture in particular.   As Bono alludes to in Rattle and Hum, he re-stamped the proto-punk of the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter”

Decade :: Fugazi, The Argument (2001)

What is it that makes us want to deconstruct art by units of time? Lists. We love making them. We love arguing over them. And here, on the verge of a new decade, we’re in a position to do the same again. What were the best albums of the past ten years?

Here at AD, we started talking it through and decided we weren’t going to add to the cacophony of lists being put out by various music pubs. There are enough of those. Rather, we elected to let our four main writers have a chance to write . . .

Diversions :: Port O’Brien on Albums of the Decade

(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.)

As the decade begins to wrap itself up, today's Diversions catches up with Port O'Brien's Van Pierszalowski as he runs down some of his favorite albums of the past ten years. The bay-area band released their sophomore album, Threadbare, on the TBD imprint earlier this month and can soon be found touring Europe beginning in November though mid-December. Do see this band live.

Modest   Mouse :: The Moon And Antartica - This record came out when I was just getting into music other than Green Day and Rancid.   A friend of mine gave me a Fugazi CD and   The Lonesome Crowded West when I just started high school, and I immediately was obsessed with MM.   When this record came out, it was the record of my life for a long, long time, and still is in a lot of ways.

Lil Wayne :: Tha Carter III - This is my favorite record of the last couple years, by far.   Its one of the most emotionally driven records in a long time.   Weezy is the best thing to happen to music since Kurt Cobain.

Little Wings :: Magic Wand - From Lil' Wayne to Little Wings.   Two records that are equally amazing, but couldn't me more different.   This is the best record to come from that whole "freak folk" or whatever kind of thing....   Every song is so different melodically, lyrically, and the album flows like no other.

Jordaan Mason & The Horse Museum

Sometimes an album's cover really does capture the atmosphere of its aural contents -- something we semi-regularly explore on the recurring Scratch The Surface feature.   Jordaan Mason's cryptic blend of fucked folk, Divorce Lawyers I Shaved My Head, is one . . .

Ernie Graham :: S/T 1971

Ernie Graham was a member of Eire Apparent, whose claim to fame was their Sunrise album, produced by Jimi Hendrix. His brilliant 1971 solo record often gets the 'pub rock' tag, but sounds closer to genuine Americana, like The Band record that never was. It doesn't feel like most pub rock (even considering Nick Lowe's Brinsley Schwarz filled out the backing band); it may just be because Graham hailed from England that . . .
