Beach House :: Sunday Morning Sounds

Read music blogs? If so you have no doubt read (numerous) blurbs on the languid, yet exceptional, Beach House debut -- and for good reason. Laid back in all the right places, this may be the Sunday morning album of 2006. The LP makes the case for quality unobtrusive background music that seeps in over time/over coffee with the morning news.If you're here in Los Angeles, the Baltimore duo will be playing become a member or log in.

Loudquietloud :: A Film About the Pixies

In my mind The Pixies canon is hallowed ground, so much so that I opted out of seeing them live when they re-formed in 2004 for fear the experience might taint the music and memories for me. After watching this DVD I see that my fears were unwarranted as the . . .

The Devil And Daniel Johnston :: DVD

A truly great documentary works for the audience regardless of it's source material; one such recent example of this is The Devil And Daniel Johnston. Regarded by some as an incomparable artistic genius, and by others as a troubled and talentless hack, Johnston's cult of personality is polarizing to say the least.

A haunting film, director Jeff Feuerzeig captures . . .

The Evens :: Get Evens

While picking up the The Evens new release, Get Evens, Tuesday it dawned on me that the purchase was actually quite fitting with all the political hub-bub in the air (tv/conversation/computer/papers) of late. There is still something satisfying and somehow comforting about a new . . .

A.D. Exclusive :: Travel By Sea (In Studio)

We had a special guest visiting the loft studios at Little Radio yesterday. Kyle Kersten, one half of rising indie-folk duo Travel By Sea, stopped by The Aquarium Drunkard Show and spent a couple of hours playing unreleased songs off their forthcoming album. We also chatted briefly about the roots of the outfit, and how he and Brian Craft came to work together, production, influences, etc. **Special thanks to Jimmy . . .

As requested, below is the tracklisting order for this week's podcast.Today's episode is an eclectic ode to the 1960s, a decade I only know from history books, film, anecdotes and of course, music. The following two hours span fairly well known sixties pop and . . .

Guitars…Cadillacs…Hillbilly Music

Most folks today are completely unaware of Dwight Yoakam's original punk rock alliances at the beginning of his career. For when Yoakam started out his music was completely disregarded by the established country music regime who saw him as a honky tonk rebel. Instead, and quite fortuitous, Yoakam was readily embraced by the L.A. punk rock/rockabilly scene including X, and become a member or log in.

Spencer Davis Group/Traffic/Blind Faith

There was a time, and not so long ago, when any mention of the name "Steve Winwood" quickly conjured images of very bad MTV videos and cheesy '80s pop pap. For me, this lasted until late-college when an acquaintance emphatically exclaimed, "no, you're mistaken , Stevie Winwood used to be the man." It was then that I discovered the trifecta that is the Spencer Davis Group/Traffic/Blind Faith. Yes, it turns out that Winwood was indeed . . .

Wowee Zowee :: Sordid Sentinals Edition

And so begins the second song off my favorite Pavement album, Wowee Zowee. This Tuesday Matador Records will release the band's third LP in their ongoing extended reissue campaign that began with . . .

Elephant Micah :: Embarrassment of Riches

I featured the formidable songwriting talents of Elephant Micah once before on the Drunkard at the tail end of 2005. Just recently I received in the mail the new Elephant Micah EP Embarrassment of Riches. Self released, Micah has another upcoming project entitled Hindu Windmills due out exclusively on vinyl before the end of the year (cd to follow thereafter). Until . . .

Swan Lake :: Beast Moans

I can only imagine the anticipatory vibe surrounding the release of late '60s supergroup Blind Faith's sole release was something akin to that of what the indie community has been experiencing the past few months in regard to the Swan Lake project. Comprised of Destroyer/New Pornographer Dan Bejar, Wolf Parade/Sunset . . .

Frank Black :: Los Angeles Re-visited

I lost touch with Frank Black's music years ago, but not before his 1993 debut/eponymous solo album. At the time, as a rabid and devout Pixies fan, this album was highly anticipated...and hey, surprise, it wasn't the Pixies sound. But between it and the Breeders' records it was close enough . . .

The Verdict: It's fantastic to listen to this Rhino reissue of The Pretenders debut in the here and now of late 2006. Let me gush for a moment; if this album dropped today it . . .

Hunky Dory :: Quicksand (demo)

1971's Hunky Dory has long been, and remains, one of my very favorite Bowie albums. But after I heard the version with the bonus tracks, I found the original studio version to fall a little flat when compared with it's demo counterpart. I love the acoustic jagged edges the demo leaves mixed in . . .
