Teenage Fanclub :: Shadows

Five years is a long time between albums, but after 20 years as a band, Teenage Fanclub has certainly earned the right to take their time. It's been an interesting wait, however, because of their last effort (2005's Man-Made) which saw the group slowly moving towards a softer destination with their classicist power pop. Gone are the days of cracking noise raves like "Everything Flows" or even electrified sing-alongs like "Sparky's Dream.

Free Energy :: Stuck on Nothing

Dust off your glitter and tuck your hair behind your ears, Free Energy is here and their hubcap diamond stars are polished and ready to cruise. The Philly-via-MN quintet’s Stuck on Nothing is pure, irony-free, big-smile rock ‘n’ roll for the summertime, filling up the middle spaces between boogie and glam and power pop . . .

R. Stevie Moore :: Phonography

R. Stevie Moore, with hundreds of albums under his belt - most of them home-recordings released on hissy cassette tape and hand-marked CD-R - is an unrecognized genius. Born in Nashville, son to session man and Elvis's bass player Bob Moore, Robert Steven Moore grew up in the music business. Opting to make it on his own with the reel-to-reel instead of working sessions, his dedication to independent recording has yielded troves of unaffected, wildly original music. He recently told Vanity Fair: "I've worked . . .

Sevens (90s One-Hitters) :: Spacehog/In the Meantime

(Sevens, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

AD is spending the month of May looking at some one-hitters from the 90s; an age rife with overlooked “alternative” gems from the days of 120 Minutes and the just below-the-surface power-pop scene that was bursting with great music. Sevens takes a look at a handful of these singles.

Vic Chesnutt :: About To Choke

The opening line of Vic Chesnutt's About to Choke is about as apt a self description as one could ask for from a writer: "A funny pilgrim on a crazy crusade." And whether this was meant to be referential to Chesnutt's life on the whole or merely his then recent plunge into the upper echelons of major label recording, it feels only too . . .

Aquarium Drunkard Presents :: Lotus Plaza – A Mixtape

Helping me bend space and time this week on the AD show is Lockett Pundt of Lotus Plaza and Deerhunter.   The Lotus Plaza debut, The Floodlight Collective, remains one of my favorite sleeper LPs from 2009; an album that---if you appreciate the aesthetic of his main gig---I suggest you buy, beg, borrow or steal. Below is the mixtape Pundt put together for AD -- catch his guest DJ set this Friday during the second hour of the XMU show.

Tame Impala :: Innerspeaker

Psychedelic music typically references an out-of-body experience. Dungen are masters of the genre, so were Cream and The Beatles, and all of these bands will certainly creep up as Innerspeaker massages your sense of hearing. Hell, even vocalist/guitarist Kevin Parker's voice sounds so naturally close to John Lennon. But there's more being explored here beyond the band's peers, hallucinogenic panning and weed references. Deerhunter :: Who Makes The Nazis (The Fall, Live @ The BBC)

Lockett Pundt (Lotus Plaza/Deerhunter) will be my guest next week on the radio show. Earlier this month Deerhunter paid a visit to the BBC studios while in London. Amongst the tracks cut during the live radio session was a cover of The Fall's "Who Makes The Nazis." Audio rip courtesy of JPs Blog.

Diversions :: Everest on Richard Swift

(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.)

If you're local, and like the rock & roll, chances are you have caught an Everest show or two. And even if you're not, with the band frequently touring with likes of Neil Young and Wilco, you very well may have seen them live. The band's sophomore album, On Approach, was just released May 11 on Warner Bros/Vapor Records. Everest is a band with a sense of history; both an acknowledgment and incorporation of those who came before; something that was no more evident than the last time we caught up with the band: Joel Graves reflecting on his favorite (lesser known) tracks in the Neil Young catalog. Today we catch up with Elijah Thomson as he riffs on his favorite Richard Swift moments.. In addition to playing bass in Everest, Thomson has worked on several of Swift’s records handling engineering and mixing duties as well as playing bass. And if you visit here often, you know we love some Swift.

The Nightcrawlers :: The Little Black Egg

What the Hell is that little black egg all about!? I’m still not sure, but ever since that jangly mess of a song got permanently stuck in my head, I’ve found myself wanting one too. If that egg’s anything like the tune, then it must be something good. It was certainly good enough to crack the billboard charts and secure The Nightcrawlers a spot in that pantheon of garage bands (along with the Syndicate of Sound and The Choir) with nothing more to offer than one remarkable song.

Well I’m glad to say . . .
