o’ death :: head home

I have been anticipating this debut album for months after a friend turned me onto them this past Fall. The O'death sound: Imagine a slightly disturbing blend of old-world Appalachian folk music crossed with Tom Waits fronting a modern-rock/folk band. Insanity works for the band, and it's clearly captured on the album. It's the soundtrack to your worst nightmare...or perhaps a bad experience with hallucinogens . . .

Morrissey :: (Glam) Renaissance Man

Morrissey, circa 1992, moments before tearing shirt off...Morrissey...loved and hated, but rarely flat out ignored. 1992's **Your Arsenal is my favorite post-Smiths Morrissey-joint all around -- kind of a glam renaissance album with Mick Ronson producing, giving it that sordid glam texture and feel. This was the kick in the ass the Mozzer needed after the uneven . . .

The Meters II, NYC :: Live Upload Series VI

George Porter with Professor Longhair

Okay, I suppose the Heads posts were enough of a segue to steer us out of the indie/alt.country/folk territory for awhile and into some deep New Orleans funk & soul. And I do mean funk, this shit is greasy -- gets right under your fingernails funky.

Humid, hot, sticky grooves -- damn, it really is that . . .

Talking Heads :: Remain In Light (Re-issue)

Believe the hype. Talking Heads were one of the finest/inventive bands of the 20th century and this album is their opus. Coming on the tails of Fear of Music, Byrne and company fused post-punk, funk, latin-rhythms, pop, and everything else . . .

Return Of The Grievous Angel :: A Tribute

There have been many a "Gram parsons tribute album" over the past 30+ years, but this 1999 release is one of the best. A major factor being Emmylou Harris's involvement, lending both credibilty and her amazing talent to the project. Most of the usual suspects are in attendance (Wilco, Whiskeytown, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, etc.) -- as well as some surprises (Elvis Costello . . .

PASTE Magazine :: Daniel Hutchens

Well, I was going to try and keep things under wraps until a proper website was up and running, but recent events (PASTE magazine's best living songwriter poll) have changed that. An Aquarium Drunkard has started a small label called Autumn Tone Records, and I am honored that one of our first releases will be none other than Daniel Hutchens. So Much For The City…

I recently revisited So Much For The City on a road trip and forgot all over again that these guys are not from rustic California canyon country, but urban Dublin. Well done, fellas...got me again. I was reminded of what a great album this is through and through, a bit derivative yes, but so is everything in 2006. Sooo, if . . .

Joseph Plunkett & The Weight :: Redux

The hard twang continues. For those of you who enjoy the Steve Earle/Dwight Yoakam/Star Room Boys aspect of An Aquarium Drunkard, Do Not miss out on this. On the other hand, for those of you that hate that shit, don't bother downloading. This is hard country recorded in Athens, GA, but I hear they are moving on up to Brooklyn . . .

Iron & Wine :: The Sea & The Rhythm EP

The Sea & The Rhythm EP: A five track companion set following Iron & Wine’s 2002 Sub Pop debut, The Creek Drank the Cradle. Another lo-fi experience with an atmosphere comparable to the material on the first full length album. Things changed . . .
