John Hermann :: Other Tales From Oxford, MS

John Hermann's 2001 Fat Possum Records debut, Smiling Assassin, combines Hermann's love of "cowboy chords" with the barroom rock & roll he heard (and played) in and around Oxford, MS since 1987. Enlisting an intimidating backup band, Hermann aurally eases his way through the deep South one song at a time. Preview these tracks below -- record available through Fat Possum and/or eMusic

Jens Lekman II :: AUS/US Tour EPs

If you did not grab the Jens Lekman US/AUS tour eps from The Perm & Skullet last week, not to worry as they have been posted to Lekman's website for download, along with recordings he made at 15 (I didn't bother listening to those, let me know if they are interesting). Here are the tour-only ep tracks I have been enjoying thanks to P . . .

Beck :: One Foot In The Grave

When beck signed to Geffen it was with the caveat that he could still release albums under other labels. Such was the case with 1994's One Foot In The Grave, released on Washington state's K Records. A bare bones lo-fi freaked out folk album if there ever was one. Since it's release Beck has hinted at this style many times, but rarely so precise and concentrated.

Plastic Ono Band :: John Lennon

Plastic Ono Band: A seething, frightened, angry glimpse into an artist's pained soul. Arguably John's best solo output, if completely misunderstood at the time of it's release. Exorcising his demons as the tapes rolled -- the analog offspring of the Primal Scream therapy he was undergoing at the time. Post-Beatlemania and post-divorce . . .

M. Ward :: Morning Becomes Eclectic 2004

M. Ward's May 6, 2004 visit with KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic host Nic Harcourt. I was lucky enough to see Ward open up for My Morning Jacket later that weekend, at the Avalon in Hollywood, performing most of the songs below. The cover of Bowie's "Let's Dance" was the highlight of his opening set, in which he . . .

Doveman :: The Acrobat

photo: kathryn yuThe Acrobat is it's own little universe. A quiet, vulnerable place where it rains most of the time and the inhabitants rarely speak above a whisper. Coffee is served all day, and everyone tends to stay up late and think too much. Lights are used sparingly, and there is no such season as Summer here. The music only plays on turntables and the tone is thick . . .

Shelley Short :: Americana Heiress

New Album: Captain WIld Horse (Rides The Heart Of Tomorrow)"The new album hits hard for such gentle music. Short wrings every drop of emotion from story-songs like "Goodbye Old Morning" and "Like Anything, It's Small" and delivers lovesick meditations like "Pullin' Pullin'" and "Wild Wild Horses" with almost painful tenderness. But she isn't sure how best to describe her sound. "I think I would have to say folk -- I suppose that's . . .

Steve Earle :: I Thought You Should Know

I am a big fan of most of Steve Earle's material -- the post-prison/post-addiction stuff in particular. While I do agree with some of the man's politics, some of it does get a little heavy handed for my taste. That's when a song like "I Thought You Should Know" comes in to save the day. A good old fashioned down and out, lovesick tearjerker in the midst of a political album.DOWNLOAD:MP3: become a member or log in.

Simon & Garfunkel :: New York Folk Tales

The music of Simon & Garfunkel has been with me for a long time. I first bought their greatest hits compilation in the sixth grade after overhearing it at a friend's house while his mom listened as she did whatever it is mom's do. I think it was the first "adult" music purchase I ever made...before then my tastes were more along the lines of Ratt and Motley Crue, Zod bless 'em both. I admittingly don't listen to them all that much anymore, but sometimes . . .
