The B-52’s :: Athens, GA 1979

1979: A group of kids from Athens, Georgia got together and made a big splash. New Wave was in it's infancy and the B-52's debut album helped set the tone for the new decade on the horizon: The '80s. Their sound would change by the end of the decade . . .

Josh Rouse :: Bedroom Classics II

Less than a year after releasing his last album Nashville, a love letter of sorts to the city of the same name, Josh Rouse tides his fan base over with Bedroom Classics II. According to Josh, "'Bedroom Classics, Vol . . .

Shuggie Otis :: California Soul

"Nearly three years in the making, the deeply personal "Inspiration Information" was the culmination of Shuggie’s intense self-imposed apprenticeship, a genuinely visionary song cycle that featured primitive but soulful drum-machine meditations ("Aht uh Mi Hed," "XL-30"), satiny pop orchestration backing shrewd jazz guitar ("Rainy Day") and suitelike funky dance music that glides from a roots-reggae backbeat to . . .

The Cover Wars :: The Clash: Straight To Hell

The Cover Wars return to An Aquarium Drunkard after an extended absence. Spurred by a jukebox reminder on Sunset blvd. this past weekend, I set down my cocktail and made a mental note to post this up. Clash purists may scoff at Josh Rouse's sparse arrangement, but I see greatness in both. Lovely. DOWNLOAD:MP3: become a member or log in.

The Dismemberment Plan :: 1993 – 2003

"The Dismemberment Plan started on January 1, 1993. The initial lineup was Eric Axelson, Jason Caddell, Steve Cummings, and Travis Morrison. After recording their first album, in 1995, Joe Easley replaced Steve Cummings. That cemented the band's lineup for the rest of its existence. The last show was September 1, 2003, at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. The band recorded four albums."DOWNLOAD:MP3: become a member or log in.

This One Goes Out To The LG…

"Recorded live at New York's Fillmore East in the spring of 1970, this CD (as well as a film of the same name) documents a slapdash extravaganza (the whole thing was conceived, organized, and abandoned over the course of two months) that overflows with big, brassy, rockin' soul. Front and center is Joe Cocker, a spastically charismatic Brit soul shouter. The bandleader is Leon Russell, playing some . . .

Up & Coming (eyes peeled/ears open)

I get quite the mailbag here at the Aquarium Drunkard's home office each week. Often it is MP3's from various rising bands looking for a little exposure. Some good, some not-so-good, and some great. I have little interest on the so-called cutting-edge per se, as the folks on my blog-roll have that covered (and do it far better than I ever could). But occaionally I do like to . . .
