fIREHOSE :: Sometimes

Songs: Illinois' recent fIREHOSE video collection post led me to dig up my favorite tune on the band's second album, if'n. It's hard to believe this song is now twenty years old.

Great World of Sound :: Outtake/Ola Podrida

Heads up, filmmaker Craig Zobel's Great World of Sound will hit theaters mid September in select cities around the country. It's great -- go see it, and find out how music really gets made, a ha ha ha. We had the opportunity to catch a screening this summer at the Los Angeles Film Festival and were as pulled in by the film's humanity as we were the humor, which is no small feat.

Off The Record ::: J. Tillman (Seattle, WA)

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Stephen Stills :: Just Roll Tape: April 26th, 1968

As an absolute huge fan of Stephen Stills' late sixties and early seventies output (ever heard Mannasas!?) the news of a, recently unearthed, mass of previously unreleased demos from '68 immediately piqued my curiosity.

While his sometime bandmate/friend/arch-rival, Neil Young, gets most of the critical accolades these days . . .

Yellow Fever :: The Culver City EP

One of our favorite EPs of 2006 was that of the Austin, TX based lo-fi pop outfit Yellow Fever. If you were a fan of the seminal Raincoats, it's highly recommended that you investigate this female driven group. They just released some new jams via a 7" entitled The Culver City EP, in a very limited pressing of 500 copies.

While its only been part of my collection the past six weeks, the Searching for Soul compilation, released a couple of years ago by the always on-point Luv 'N Haight imprint, has left its mark. The Avett Brothers :: Emotionalism

Prior to the March release of Emotionalism I counted myself a casual fan of the Avett Brothers -- this was the record that changed that.

Made up of two actual brothers (Seth Avett and Scott Avett) and a buddy (Bob Crawford), this North Carolina country/bluegrass/indie-folk outfit improve and become more versatile on every album. While I liked their last LP, Four Thieves Gone, Emotionalism is taking there sound to another level entirely.

Neil Young :: Where The Buffalo Roam

"I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone... but they've always worked for me." - Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Listen, I'm not here to defend the original feature film based on the writings of Hunter S. Thompson entitled Where The Buffalo Roam (1980)...oh wait, yes I am, but I'll be brief.

The movie, typically, gets critically panned every time I hear it brought up in conversation; no matter . . .

The Modern Lovers :: Reissued (U.S.)

Any discussion regarding albums and artists who were ahead of the game in terms of influencing upcoming musical movements must include The Modern Lovers debut LP. This is the precursor to punk -- absolutely essential listening.

Recorded in 1972, and released in 1976, the album was wayyy ahead of it’s time, influencing punk, post-punk and new wave. Hell, it even sounds remarkably fresh today.

Without a doubt The Modern Lovers are the missing piece between the Lou Reed helmed Velvet Underground and The Ramones.
