Halloween isn't that tough to spell. But anytime I write or type the word, I find myself subconsciously singing Wade Denning and Kay Lande's "Halloween." Released on Golden Records in 1969 as part of a record titled Halloween: Games, Songs and Stories, it's one of many songs on the album aimed at kids and their natural love of this most glorious of holidays.

Horror films have always straddled the line between sex and violence. One could say the same about porn. Bob Dylan is no easy cover. His distinctive voice, both vocally and lyrically, make it nearly impossible for many artists to capture the proper temperament. There are even some Dylan lyrics that just sound, well, wrong coming from the throats of anyone but him. One of the more disturbing pieces to be laid on tape--Evariste's 1967 "Connais tu l'animal qui inventa le calcul intégral." Very little idea what is going on here (it's in French) except to note it sounds like a mix of ritual séance, orgy, and, well, a very fucked up variety show. Good fun!

Not the first time Bob McFadden And Dor have graced these pages, but with Halloween next week this is definitely the most timely/appropriate. Like the majority of McFadden's shtick, "The Mummy," off the 1959 LP Songs Our Mummy Taught Us, is a kitschy spoof of the early horror films of the day coupled with the, then, contemporary beat culture. A doozy that deserves a space on any Halloween mixtape.
