Penned by Jerry Leiber and Billy Edd Wheeler, and made famous by Johnny Cash and June Carter (their take won a Grammy), "Jackson" hearkens back to the days of classic storytelling in song. The tune is also one of my favorite duets that Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra took on during their fruitful collaborative period. Sinatra's repetitive "Jackson, Jackson, Jackson," at the end, is tops.

As the last remnants of Summer began to burn off throughout the length of September, the stage was set for taking in the reissue of R.E.M.'s third LP, 1985's Fables of The Reconstruction, as a whole. 2010 can be summed up as the year of extreme musical escapism. For example, an influential and meaningful genre like “ambient” has been watered down into sub-categories like “witch-house”, “chill-wave”, “wave-gaze” and dozens more. Sigh. All of these terms represent the same basic feeling and trend that has dominated this year’s music releases, the powerful and influential blogosphere and even popular music criticism, yet none of these micro-genres feel like movements. Some of it is definitely memorable and holds promise beyond the bedroom recordings that have marked its heavy promotion and fuss. But let . . .

We're doing our Halloween party this year, on October 29th, with Japan's favorite exiles, Peelander Z---which makes perfect sense for the occasion if you have seen this band live.   At the Grandstar in Chinatown. We had them play on two consecutive Hot Freaks bills, at SXSW, and they take it beyond thunderdome (see video after the jump). You really don't want to miss this. As always, free Vodka from 8-10pm, DJs, etc.   Also on the bill: Brothers Collateral and our friends Sir Weston. Admission is eight dollars if you wear a costume.
