At the beginning of 2007 I caught one of Of Montreal's first dates for the Hissing Fauna tour and was sufficiently blown away by both the live rendering of the new material -- and the live spectacle it employed. Friday night, while in New York, my mind was again blown, but this time even more so. Everything was bigger and more frenetic; the room, the crowd, the energy, the theatrics, the props, the extras, the costumes, the music, the band lineup, the backdrop -- and then, add one white stallion . . .

David Berman's voice dominates the six records that he has released under the once-tattering banner of the Silver Jews. It's astounding, and yet makes perfect sense, that the Muppet movies of the 1970's were full of great music. Going far beyond the educational songs (catchy in their own right) of Sesame Street, The Muppet Movie (1979) is chock full of quality tunes boasting many a foot-stomping riff.
"Movin' Right Along" is funny, satirical, and has got a folky-goodness about it. Driving bar-room piano, fast cymbals on the drums -- suddenly a string section-kicks in. Sure, the built in jokes . . .

My Morning Jacket : Recorded at Austin’s KVRX radio in the Fall of 2000 with four additional bonus tracks of Jim James’ solo appearance at the station in March of ‘01. This one is for those of you who (like me) prefer the days when MMJ still had more of that high lonesome, rural, edge to their sound.

Since their original appearance on AD in 2006 I have had countless requests to re-post this 1967 recording session. So, here it is. I came upon this 1967 rehearsal about five years ago, and it has since become my favorite Beach Boys recording. All very understated and to the point. Besides saying that, I will let the songs speak for themselves. If you’re a fan, grab them now as they will only remain up for 14 days. Cheers.
