Sevens (Politiko) :: By The Time I Get To Arizona

(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song. From now through the election, Sevens will focus on political songs)

November 2nd of this year will be the 25th anniversary of President Regan's signing of the bill that officially made the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday a federal observance. But the signing of that bill, contentous as it already was, would only pave the way for . . .

Hacienda :: She’s Got Ahold On Me (Video)

I'm loving this Hacienda album, and play these dudes about every week on the SIRIUS show. Posted the MP3 for "She's Got Ahold On Me" about six weeks ago, so below is the video. Dig. Also, you can stream the LP in it's entirety via Dodge.

The Replacements :: The Sire/Warner Reissues

The new set of Replacements reissues, focusing on their four albums for Sire/Warner Brothers records (Tim, Pleased to Meet Me, Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down), deal with the most controversial albums in the band's catalogue - controversial in regards to their stock compared to the earlier albums, in recording quality, even in integrity. These albums are often seen as the . . .

Sevens :: John Loudermilk, Goin’ To Hell On A Sled

(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

Anyone else ready for this election to end? Me too. Wall Street has lost its temporary gains, we're still at war, the country is more polarized than ever and the national deficit is so immense most of us cannot wrap our heads around it without inducing a minor headache. Having said that, here is some levity John D. Loudermilk style. In 1969 Loudermilk released his psych-country classic

Les Blanks :: Shoot The Horse (2008)

Sleazy...nasty...seventies rock 'n roll. If that's your bag (and why wouldn't it be) add Les Blanks to your radar, as they are just that -- only they exist in the here and now of the 21st century. Easy touchstones for the band's live sound would be a little CCR crossed with the soul of early Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Shoot The Horse is available on vinyl or downloadable, digitally, for free

Of Montreal :: Roseland Ballroom, NYC

At the beginning of 2007 I caught one of Of Montreal's first dates for the Hissing Fauna tour and was sufficiently blown away by both the live rendering of the new material -- and the live spectacle it employed. Friday night, while in New York, my mind was again blown, but this time even more so. Everything was bigger and more frenetic; the room, the crowd, the energy, the theatrics, the props, the extras, the costumes, the music, the band lineup, the backdrop -- and then, add one white stallion . . .

Silver Jews :: Chicago, IL (Metro 10.10.08)

David Berman's voice dominates the six records that he has released under the once-tattering banner of the Silver Jews. The baritone pulls tension across the loose ends of the Joos' fall-apart country, binding everything together and sounding for the life of it like the closing of an industrial zipper. And the words that that voice forms! Berman's lyrics — collages of poetry, not-so-traditional story songs, and the occasional confession — demand constant attention, almost to the point that it seems risky to put . . .

Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem

It's astounding, and yet makes perfect sense, that the Muppet movies of the 1970's were full of great music. Going far beyond the educational songs (catchy in their own right) of Sesame Street, The Muppet Movie (1979) is chock full of quality tunes boasting many a foot-stomping riff.

"Movin' Right Along" is funny, satirical, and has got a folky-goodness about it. Driving bar-room piano, fast cymbals on the drums -- suddenly a string section-kicks in. Sure, the built in jokes . . .

Sevens (Politiko) :: Burn On and Cuyahoga

(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song. From now through the election, Sevens will focus on political songs)

While the environment shouldn't seem like a political issue, it has become one of the nastier ones of the past half century. The conflict between capitalism and conservation is, at times, a brutish one. And in one case, the problems became so obvious, the lack of consideration so egregious, that the seemingly impossible happened: a river caught fire.

The . . .

My Morning Jacket :: KVRX Radio Session 2000

My Morning Jacket : Recorded at Austin’s KVRX radio in the Fall of 2000 with four additional bonus tracks of Jim James’ solo appearance at the station in March of ‘01. This one is for those of you who (like me) prefer the days when MMJ still had more of that high lonesome, rural, edge to their sound.
