Ben Weaver :: Paper Sky (May 2007)

I've been looking forward to Ben Weaver's upcoming album, Paper Sky, since last spring when I received an unsolicited, unmastered three song sampler in the mail culled from his (then) just recorded sessions with producer Brian Deck. As I wrote last May, Weaver's tunes are a stark reminder of why I try and listen to every CD that . . .

Saying Goodbye To Arthur Magazine

You may have read over the weekend that L.A.'s Arthur magazine has announced that it will be closing its doors, effective immediately, after five prolific years of publication. Since the Drunkard's inception I have written about the magazine (available free locally), and its various offshoots, numerous times and am genuinely sorry to see it go.

Besides the exploration of psych-folk and the surrounding sub-genres, the magazine regularly featured guest contributors including, but not limited to, Thurston Moore

Girl, I’m Just A Jeepster For Your Love…

Friday evening, while listening to T. Rex's "Jeepster" on repeat with some friends, something came up about Blur's thinly veiled nod to the tune on the track "I'm Just A Killer For Your Love" off their 1997 self-titled album.

Sounded like a fine idea for a post, what, with the 2003 reissue of T . . .

Pink Nasty :: The Interview

A.D. -- I first came to know your work through Will Oldham (the Summer In The Southeast tour). How did that come about, and how was the experience? Had you been performing/recording prior to that tour?

P.N. -- the procurement of my services in will's band for the southeast tour was born from a series of frenzied, hard balling, hand wringing negotiations. once he agreed to my terms, fees, per diem and cut of his tour only eps and mini singles i signed on. in turn i gave him some of my back end! hehehe. BUT SERIOUSLY...he liked my brothers
Black Nastys sex raps and asked Black to open for him and thru that he decided he wanted me for his own band as well so i had to pull double doody! i hadn't performed much except for the shawn colvin covers at high school assemblies so it was weird to be playing sold out shows in front of his sweaty, slobbering, erect fans. i pretended that they were there for me sometimes. i think i've been spoiled cuz now when i play for 5 people i kinda wanna kill myself.

A.D. -- You come from a musical family, your two brothers formed The Kevins and one records/produces under the nom de plume Black Nasty. Was music, and the playing of music, a big part of your childhood growing up?

P.N. -- Yes. We had a band called Satans Undercover and we would freestyle all these weird, vibrant, enchanting, visceral, exuberant midwestern pop songs that i like to dip back into when im stuck. i was also a child model but a facial scarring accident involving the neighbors cat made me cut a new path. but the cat and i are cool now and he's a real cool cat.

Andrew Bird :: Armchair Apocrypha

I was by no means a follower Andrew Bird's past work with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, therefore his 2005 breakthrough album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, hit me from left field like a love punch. But I won't be caught off guard again. Come March 20th, Bird is back with a new album entitled become a member or log in.

Neil Young Archives II :: Massey Hall 1971

You have no doubt seen this 1971 Neil Young live at Massey Hall show posted here before in bootleg form, but come March 12th it will be released (with an accompanying DVD) as the second live offering in preparation for Neil Young's archives project.

Here are some notes on The Massey Hall release in Neil's own words: "This is the album that should have come out between After The Gold Rush and Harvest," Young says now. "David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the . . .

Kelly Hogan :: Papa Was A Rodeo (cover)

Watching the Neko Case: Austin City Limits DVD got me thinking about Kelly Hogan who accompanies Case on vocals throughout the performance.

Hogan, like myself, is an Atlanta ex-pat who left the south in 1997 for Chicago where she continues to pursue music. I have always made an effort to keep tabs on her career, as her old band, become a member or log in.

Lewis And Clarke :: Upcoming Album

We are getting closer to the release of Lewis And Clarke's next album, Blasts of the Holy Birth, and according to the outfit's website it is a "testament to process on many levels, and it carries various themes as found in a text called "The Secret of the Golden Flower."

While I am not familiar with the text, I do know if the album . . .

Performance :: Memo From Turner

February 13th saw the release of the 1970 psychedelic/schizophrenic gangster-meets-pop star tale Performance. Famously known as Mick Jagger's on screen debut, Performance expertly captures the late sixties decadence and decline into hard drugs and paranoia.But . . .

Eccentric Soul :: Twinight’s Lunar Rotation

Furthering it's mission to make the kind of records you didn't even know you wanted to own, Numero Group's Eccentric Soul series continues to amaze with this latest collection entitled Twinight's Lunar Rotation. Ignoring the mainstream, Numero Group rallies the troops and digs deep into attics, basements, yard sales, and other dusty holes to compile this collection of Chicago’s secret soul history.

As described by the group, the . . .

Neko Case :: Buckets of Rain (Bob Dylan)

Who else out there has recently had their ass kicked by this super-cold going around? Besides just being generally miserable, it also cut into my checking out Neko Case's gig this past weekend at the Henry Fonda here in L.A. Ah well, thanks to the good folks at New West it was not a complete bust as they had just recently . . .

Benjy Ferree :: Leaving The Nest

Benjy Ferree's 2006 LP Leaving The Nest is a fine album, if a bit schizophrenic at times. If you were to believe the online blog hype at the tail end of last year you most definitely would have expected the album to be, and I paraphrase, "a down home, back porch" affair. And, granted, that may be . . .

Big Star :: O My Soul

I've noticed over the years that whenever Big Star creeps into my daily listening habits, I in turn find myself listening to a hell of a lot more power pop in general -- and vice versa. Lately, I have been obsessing (again) over Radio City, the band's 1974 masterpiece. If you like your pop shiny and shimmering, it doesn't get any sweeter and smarter than this; an album that you can revisit fifty times and still find something that renews the whole experience.

I have . . .
