Uncle Tupelo :: No Depression (Re-issue)

A few years ago the UT catalog got picked up, dusted off, and re-issued with a handsome number of bonus tracks added to the end of each proper album. Here are two of the four tacked on to the end of the seminal No Depression

Songs For Sixty Five Roses :: A Benefit Album

As Songs:Illinois mentioned recently, Songs For Sixty Five Roses is a benefit for children with Cystic Fibrosis. When I received the foundation's letter and album last week, I was happy to assist -- but would fully endorse this album on it's artistic merits alone, even if not a charity production.A who's-who in the NC independent music scene, Sixty Five . . .

Under The Covers :: So. Central Rain

R.E.M.'s early IRS catalog reaks of Athens' GA lore. While not not always conveyed directly in the lyrics themselves, there is always a film that covers and envelopes the atmosphere of the songs. None better exemplified that "So. Central Rain."

J. Tillman :: Via Seattle

I originally posted the below write-up on October 19, 2005. Since then, Tillman has put out the limited-release album "Long May You Run" (sold out) and developed many new fans along the way. Along with the two tracks from October, check out these two songs off "Long May You Run," as well as this great interview Tillman did recently with Garrison Reid from Indieinterviews.com.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tip of . . .

Wilco :: The YHF Demos, Pt. 1/2

To read part II: Click here...---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quick anecdote: It was last Summer while listening to these demos, that on a whim, I entitled this blog "An Aquarium Drunkard." I imagine most folks recognize the reference, but if not, there it is. Any true music nerd, worth their weight in rare vinyl, loves their favorite band's demonstration field recordings. Not that they are better per se (although sometimes that is the case . . .

Kelley Stoltz :: Four Times In A Row

Dear Readers,I am in an incredibly mellow mood right now, and have played the song below four times in a row. It's good like that. It just so happens, Stoltz is from out here on the left coast, up round yonder in ye olde San Francisco. He makes records for the Sub Pop folks. The end. -Satisfied '75DOWNLOAD:MP3: Kelley Stoltz :: Words----------

o’ death :: head home

I have been anticipating this debut album for months after a friend turned me onto them this past Fall. The O'death sound: Imagine a slightly disturbing blend of old-world Appalachian folk music crossed with Tom Waits fronting a modern-rock/folk band. Insanity works for the band, and it's clearly captured on the album. It's the soundtrack to your worst nightmare...or perhaps a bad experience with hallucinogens . . .

Morrissey :: (Glam) Renaissance Man

Morrissey, circa 1992, moments before tearing shirt off...Morrissey...loved and hated, but rarely flat out ignored. 1992's **Your Arsenal is my favorite post-Smiths Morrissey-joint all around -- kind of a glam renaissance album with Mick Ronson producing, giving it that sordid glam texture and feel. This was the kick in the ass the Mozzer needed after the uneven . . .

The Meters II, NYC :: Live Upload Series VI

George Porter with Professor Longhair

Okay, I suppose the Heads posts were enough of a segue to steer us out of the indie/alt.country/folk territory for awhile and into some deep New Orleans funk & soul. And I do mean funk, this shit is greasy -- gets right under your fingernails funky.

Humid, hot, sticky grooves -- damn, it really is that . . .
