Tortoise & Bonnie “Prince” Billy :: Covering

Another pic of '70s era BossOn Friday I got a copy of the Tortoise & Bonnie "Prince" Billy collaboration that came out earlier this year. Prior to Friday, I had only let myself listen to their cover of Daniel as I wanted to absorb the album as a whole. So glad I waited -- total re-invention with excellent results . . .

Drive-By Truckers :: Alabama Ass Whuppin’

Alright, admittingly, I am pretty fired up for the upcoming Blessing And A Curse album. You'll probably see a lot of DBT posts between now and then. Good news if you're a fan, if ya ain't, well...not so much. Alabama Ass Whuppin'

Red House Painters :: Down Colorful Hill

Down Colorful Hill was the Red House Painters coming out party. Kozelek's haunting angst-rock had found it's way to tape, and the results were both noteworthy and emotionally charged. These harrowing tales of pain became the band's calling card in the years to follow. DOWNLOAD:MP3: Red House Painters :: Medicine BottleMP3:

The Freightwhaler Sessions

Sometime in early 1996, Whiskeytown members Ryan Adams and drummer Skillet Gilmore took some time off after the Faithless Street album to form the short lived alt.country outfit Freightwhaler. Also on board were: Chris Laney (bass); Sloane Doggett (guitar); and Nicholas Petti (pedal steel). These studio-demo recordings are a must have for those interested in early Whiskeytown and/or the burgeoning mid '90s . . .

Gram Parsons :: International Submarine Band

The late gram ParsonsPrior to his stint with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers a young Gram Parsons formed The International Submarine Band shortly after dropping out of Harvard. One of my favorite country singers, Parsons, even at a young age, was able to convey an honesty and truth to his music that only increased with subsequent albums. These tracks, plus an additional one, can be found on the excellent compilation entitled become a member or log in.

Chris Mills :: The Wall To Wall Sessions

"Ashes to ashes, trust to dust, I don't know what it means to be burned by something you love so much, I think I must be living the dream..." -- Chris Mills Chris Mills' Wall To Wall Sessions reminds me of digging through my parents old record collection. The production, the instrumentation, the accompanying vocals...all of it soaked in '70s era sentimentality, minus any of the pastiche. become a member or log in.

Deadboy & Elephantmen :: Are The Night Sky

It would be easy to write these two off as a White Stripes knock off: a) boy/girl duo - check. b) lo-fi garage rock - check. c) affection for bare-boned blues sludge riffs coupled with the oh-so-quiet/precious moments. check. But you would do yourself a disservice by stopping there and not delving past the surface. In the early '00s I dismissed many, many a good band due to the proliferation of the "The" bands at . . .

Slaraffenland :: Land of Milk And Honey

Slaraffenland: "Scandinavian for "land of milk and honey".... a danish / swedish band based in Copenhagen...Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth heard one of the bands shows in NYC and was very happy with the music." -- Christian Taagehoej Since getting these two tracks in my inbox Friday, I have listened to them repeatedly and eagarly requested their second album Jinkatawa. Really enjoying these two mp3s. If you dig on experimental music, give these a minute or two of your time. Look . . .

Eef Barzelay :: Bitter Honey

Clem Snide's Eef Barzelay has a solo joint out this month. It's all acoustic -- and it's all downtrodden. So, if you don't like downer records you would absolutely loathe this one. It's a real sinker. Having said that, there are some moments on here that seem very real, like eavesdropping on a conversation between artist and instrument. Try out
