Dina Ögon :: Ficktjuven

The self-titled debut from Sweden’s Dina Ögon ... a work of singular and arresting fantasia pop, where vocalist Anna Ahnlund’s dreamy chanteuse vocals reign over a groove-laden collection dancing between bossa nova, lounge, r&b, and smooth jazz . . .

Tonstartssbandht :: Petunia

Orlando brothers Andy and Edwin White—a warm, enveloping duo known as Tonstartssbandht—return with Petunia, their follow-up to 2017’s Sorcerer, a record we dug for its dynamic and invigorated orbit of jammy neo-psych-folk, cloud-bound vocal harmonies, and spacey ambient soundscapes. This new work is a bit more song-oriented than its predecessor—it has four more tracks and one that even clocks in at well under two-minutes—but Tonstartssbandht still take their time letting their dreamy melodies and flowery, psychedelic riffs unfurl . . .

Marissa Nadler :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

The Path of the Clouds is a bit of a departure, coming after Nadler relocated from Boston to Nashville. Hemmed in by quarantine in an unfamiliar city, Nadler rekindled a childhood fascination for the stories in Unsolved Mysteries. She was transfixed, in particular, by the tales about people who disappeared suddenly and were never heard from again—the wilderness explorers Bessie and Glen Hyde, the hijacker D.B. Cooper, the prisoners who made the only successful escape from Alcatraz. She began obsessively rewatching episodes about these stories, taking notes and working the details into a collection of songs . . .

Ty Segall :: Harmonizer

There's a fine tradition of albums named after the recording studios that birthed them, so in the modern era of so much at-home recording, it's almost a warm and welcoming anachronism when it happens. Harmonizer, the first recording to be completed at Ty Segall's new Harmonizer Studios, is just that. Coming two years after Segall's last album under his own name, Harmonizer is a svelte 10 songs and 35 minutes that hums along channeling its namesake. But it's also a bit of a coming out party for a more synth-driven sound for Segall . . .

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Liam Kazar

In our recent piece on Liam Kazar's Due North, we noted that the Kansas City/Chicago polymath was "justifiably confident no matter the subject or style," as the lp highlights both his croonerisms and lyrical word play. In choosing the following three tunes for his first Lagniappe Session, Kazar leans a bit more into the croon but not at the expense of variety . . .

Gloria Ann Taylor & Misha Panfilov Sound Combo :: Be Worthy

In the late '70s Gloria Ann Taylor walked away from the music business, her career having largely stalled out since its auspicious '60s origins. Renewed interest in her work resulted in the winning 2015 compilation Love Is A Hurtin' Thing and a return to the studio before her passing in 2017. Now, her latter day recordings with Misha Panfilov Sound Combo finally see release . . .

Ustad Saami :: East Pakistan Sky

Microtonal, atmospheric and ancient. East Pakistan Sky marks the third album from Ustad Saami, the last living practitioner of surti, a modal form of the khayál technique, and precursor of the Islamic devotional music of Qawwali. Comprised of two tracks (the first of which clocks in at meditative 29 minutes) it's an intentional listen with Saami's vocals accompanied by droning harmonium, tanpura and tablas . . .

On the heels of two outstanding studio records, singer-songwriter Azniv Korkejian (Bedouine) has crafted an enviable trajectory sharing a creative space akin to the folk sphere of Karen Dalton or Nick Drake. Ahead of the forthcoming lp (out October 22), Bedouine joins us to discuss the nuances of the project, including the ability to truly focus on the recording and musicianship for the first time. Or, in her own words, "songs for the sake of songs . . .
