The Lagniappe Sessions :: Mega Bog

The songwriting vehicle of Erin Birgy, Mega Bog bathes in the multiplicity of the human condition via an ever-eccentric blend of oblique pop experimentalism. Anchored by Birgy’s ethereal yet fixed vocals, sonically, the project leans as deftly into Badalamenti-esque jazz-scapes as it does biting, angular art-rock.

For their Lagniappe Session, covers of Yukihiro Takahashi, Lady June & Kate Bush . . .

Lee “Scratch” Perry :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

When I call up the reggae legend, Lee “Scratch” Perry, The Upsetter, to talk about his new album Rainford I reach him on a grainy WhatsApp audio connection. He’s in Jamaica and he’s in bed, “looking at the lights. looking at the day, and looking at the night.”

Perry’s in his eighties and when he gets going he speaks in limericks, but he doesn’t come across as wacky, just joyful. The first thing I notice about Perry is the giggle that roils through the conversation and punctuates his sentences. It’s disarming, a Buddha-like by . . .

Dr. John’s New Orleans Swamp: 1974 Television Special with The Meters

The Night Tripper introducing The Meters. An occasion which begs the question, could things really get any funkier? Nuh-uh. The aforementioned footage is culled from the television special, Dr. John's New Orleans Swamp -- the 1974 season finale of the Chicago based Soundstage series. Whoever had the stones to make this happen deserves doubloons aplenty, along with an extra slice of king cake . . .

Jake Xerxes Fussell :: Out of Sight

His first album recorded with a full band (featuring fellow like-minded traveler Nathan Bowles on drums), Out of Sight sees Fussell fixing his gaze on songs from a wide variety of sources and locales, though the treatment they receive is the same—compassionate, revelatory, and seemingly effortless. It’s no small wonder the likes of Bill Callahan and Will Oldham count themselves among Fussell evangelists . . .

Alice Coltrane :: Live At The Berkeley Community Theater 1972

This is a bootleg, make no mistake! But however you hear it, you gotta hear it (perhaps over on YouTube?). A major addition to the Alice Coltrane canon, this soundboard recording features the pioneering musician and her incredible band (Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, Aashish Khan on sarod, Pranesh Khan on tabla and Bobby W. on tamboura and percussion) journeying fearlessly across the astral plane. Four tracks, fours sides! Tons of AC’s intense organ hijinks – how did she get that crazy sound . . .

Line Out – A Long-Form Experiment

Line Out, a one hour piece featuring twenty recordings from psychedelic and avant-garde mainstays like Can and Faust, lesser known practitioners such as Agitation Free and Novalis, and contemporary experimenters including Dungen, Beak >, and Califone, amongst others. The end result is a sometimes mesmerizing, sometime amusing, and wholly psychedelic experiment. Tune In. Turn On. Line Out . . .

Tōth: 10 Things I Do To Feel OK

Experimental pop producer Tōth joins us to examine a few of the items in his emotional and mental toolkit, and his observations reveal that his album's title—Practice Magic And Seek Professional Help When Necessary—is more than a clever comment on the self-care movement we all find ourselves considering, but rather, a code of openness and directness that finds careful application in his life and creative work . . .

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Mike Adams at His Honest Weight

Since 2011, Bloomington-based auteur Mike Adams has set about crafting a discography of sterling pop hits. His latest, There Is No Feeling Better, released earlier this year by Joyful Noise Recordings, finds him channeling familiar touchstones—the Beach Boys, the Roches, Burt Bacharach, and other sepia-toned classics—into a set of songs that address the dread and anxiety of 2019. Adams' blend of existentialism and sunny melodies is novel enough on its own, but he couples it with a warmheartedness that makes each song feel essential . . .

Six Organs of Admittance :: For Octavio Paz

One of the great 21st century guitar records – reborn! For Octavio Paz is a captivating collection of intimately spectral six-string (nylon and steel) enigmas. Originally released in 2003 on the influential Time-Lag label, it doesn’t fit neatly into any kinda American Primitive Fahey/Basho worship zone; instead, it’s a beguiling little universe of its own. Ben Chasny has never made anything quite like it since (whether with Six Organs of Admittance or one of his many other projects), which adds to the LP’s special quality . . .

Al Jarreau :: Roof Garden

Here’s something that will make you want to move your body Steve Martin à la Turk. Six and half minutes of strange, unquenchable pop-funk, the late Al Jarreau released “Roof Garden” in the libertine summer of 1981. Having long leaned away from his early 70s jazz roots, the track finds the acrobat of scat in full-on, LA R&B mode . . .

Steve Diggle (Buzzcocks) :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

"We were influenced by literature and the use of words. We realized the world was a complex place. We were interested in the complexity of human beings, so we sang about the human condition."
