2011 has been the year of two star-bloated tribute albums to Buddy Holly–this year would have been his 75th if the music hadn’t died. Every time there’s an occasion to contemplate Buddy’s behemoth legacy, it’s difficult not to mention Norman Petty, the man behind the boards for the Holly recordings between 1956 and 1958. Petty wrote some chart-toppers of his own during the ‘50s. The spoils of which provided the capital to start his homespun become a member or log in.
A couple of years back a friend hipped me to the existence of a (then) recent documentary concerning the revered '60s L.A. session players known as The Wrecking Crew. Having already read most everything I could find dealing with crew's core representation of players I made a note to seek it out. It was not long afterwards I realized that catching a screening would prove quite elusive as the critically lauded documentary has remained in limbo . . .

Tim Buckley's, self-titled, 1966 debut marks the latest entry in the Rhino Handmade series. I have an extra copy to send to an AD reader. Chunklet has been busy of late. Earlier this year the Atlanta based institution released their latest book, The Indie Cred Test, and announced they would be handling both The Olivia Tremor Control's vinyl reissues as well as a vinyl companion LP to the Jesus Lizard's reunion-tour DVD, Club. We caught up with Chunklet founder/editor Henry Owings over chips and guac at the Atlanta go-to El Myr to discuss, among other things, self-publishing, the OTC, sacred cows -- or lack thereof -- and, of course, Whirleyball.

Two months left in the year and I've had a mental note to highlight the below track since July. I have McGregor to thank for originally hipping me to this Austin based group a couple of years back, who were (then) known as Pure Ecstasy. Clarity. This is the central theme that becomes immediately apparent on Parallax, the third Atlas Sound long-player. Here, Bradford Cox’s distinctive echoed voice is cleaner, more familiar, like he’s hovering right above you. There’s a lot of space between his vocal melodies and the rest of the clamor. Lux Interior: inter-dimensional, pan-sexual, time-traveling rock & roll alien. And radio host. As Halloween draws nigh we're revving up for our annual airing of The Purple Knif Show, the one-off radio program hosted by Lux in 1984 deep in the bowels of Hollywood. One of the most unique, unheralded albums of the 60s, the C.A. Quintet's Trip Thru Hell was a small indie pressing of under 500 from the Candy Floss label, making it a very rare 1968/1969 release. Originals will set you back a pretty penny, but for the die hard may be worth it considering the CD version does not faithfully recreate the back side . . .
