Diversions :: Everest on Richard Swift

(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.)

If you're local, and like the rock & roll, chances are you have caught an Everest show or two. And even if you're not, with the band frequently touring with likes of Neil Young and Wilco, you very well may have seen them live. The band's sophomore album, On Approach, was just released May 11 on Warner Bros/Vapor Records. Everest is a band with a sense of history; both an acknowledgment and incorporation of those who came before; something that was no more evident than the last time we caught up with the band: Joel Graves reflecting on his favorite (lesser known) tracks in the Neil Young catalog. Today we catch up with Elijah Thomson as he riffs on his favorite Richard Swift moments.. In addition to playing bass in Everest, Thomson has worked on several of Swift’s records handling engineering and mixing duties as well as playing bass. And if you visit here often, you know we love some Swift.

The Nightcrawlers :: The Little Black Egg

What the Hell is that little black egg all about!? I’m still not sure, but ever since that jangly mess of a song got permanently stuck in my head, I’ve found myself wanting one too. If that egg’s anything like the tune, then it must be something good. It was certainly good enough to crack the billboard charts and secure The Nightcrawlers a spot in that pantheon of garage bands (along with the Syndicate of Sound and The Choir) with nothing more to offer than one remarkable song.

Well I’m glad to say . . .

Sevens (90s One-Hitters) :: Super Deluxe/She Came On

(Sevens, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

AD is spending the month of May looking at some one-hitters from the 90s; an age rife with overlooked “alternative” gems from the days of 120 Minutes and the just below-the-surface power-pop scene that was bursting with great music. Sevens takes a look at a handful of these singles.

In the 1990s, I got my first taste of power-pop on commercial 'alternative' radio stations. Matthew Sweet . . .

Kings Go Forth :: The Outsiders Are Back

Not unlike the jams Sharon Jones has been laying down with the Dap Kings, Milwaukee's Kings Go Forth are yet another solid notch in the belt of the ever-increasing '00s soul revival. Contrary to what some might lead you to believe, this genre/style of music never "went away," yet operated sub rosa in light of the slick sheen that became the dominant . . .

Off The Record :: Frog Eyes – Victoria, British Columbia

Off The Record is a recurring feature that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native. Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without – be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas. Today we catch up with Frog Eyes' Carey mercer as he reflects on his native Victoria, British Columbia. Frog Eyes have new LP, Paul's Tomb: A Triumph, out now on Dead Oceans.

Sevens :: Red House Painters/Cruiser

Languid like LA at dusk, "Cruiser," off the Red House Painters Old Ramon, is simultaneously both a paean to the city of Los Angeles and the narrator's romantic love interest. Ever the storyteller, Mark Kozelek's lyrics, consistently evocative, work on multiple levels painting a picture of both a relationship and mash note to LA, which, like a lot of things in the . . .

Nathaniel Rateliff :: Laughing (Video)

The guys at Yours Truly recently caught up with Nathaniel Rateliff laying down a ditty called "Laughing" while in the midst of hanging out with friends in a backyard. This is an (as far as I know) unreleased track not found on the excellent In Memory of Loss LP. Video after the jump.

The Robbs :: Cynthia Loves (1967)

"Cynthia Loves," the b-side to The Robbs "Rapid Transit," presents the oft told tale of romantic mind games under the sugary sweet guise of sixties bubblegum pop. Music supervisors take note, this one is just begging for placement.

Aquarium Drunkard Presents :: The Rising Storm – A Mixtape

Welcome to the fourth installment in a series in which I highlight some of my favorite voices online and beyond. Thus far we've featured sets by Raven Sings The Blues, Ponytone, Turquoise Wisdom and Cold Splinters.   Next up: The Rising Storm. Long before the blog's founder, Brendan McGrath, was a regular AD contributor, we bonded over a shared appreciation of obscure, forgotten and out of print sonic relics. Not surprisingly, today's mixtape sounds like something you might hear drifting out of a transistor radio while marooned at an out-of-the-way highway roadhouse. Just the way we like 'em.

Catch McGrath's guest DJ set this Friday during the second hour of my radio show. Grab this mix below and bookmark his site.

Garotas Suecas

In a way it’s kind of a shame Garotas Suecas are from Sao Paolo, Brazil. Hailing from any other locale, Tropicalia would be listed as just one amongst the bands many influences — not the first and most discussed. In truth, the band and their eponymous debut EP are equal parts soul, garage rock and yes, a good helping of Tropicalia. But in the way that their most obvious predecessor (though not necessarily influencer) Os Mutantes made the language barrier disappear between American audiences and their Portuguese lyrics, Garotas Suecas . . .

Diversions :: Gift Horse

The weather in Austin during SXSW is typically in the 80s, and this year was no different--until the final day; on Saturday it dropped to a high of 38 degrees. No one was dressed/prepared for it. After four days of running around Austin I decided to spend the majority of my afternoon camped out at 40 Watt party catching up with old friends and seeing music. One the bands I caught during the beginning of the day was Gift Horse. Performing on the sidestage, outside, the cold only seemed to fortify the band as they bashed through thirty-plus minutes of damaged sludge-rock.

On the heels of their new LP, Mountain of Youth, we caught up with the trio as they reflect on their hometown of Athens, GA's rich, and varied, musical legacy.

Phosphorescent :: Here’s To Taking It Easy

One of the achievements of Phosphorescent's ode to Willie was how comfortable Matthew Houck was at interpreting (or reinterpreting) Willie Nelson. It wasn't just that he carefully selected songs that had mostly filtered out of the cadre of Willie popularity. But he was also succeeding the wintry folk soul-lashing of Pride just two years prior. Viewing them . . .
